Why is that.....

why is that bmw owners don't know what dtm stands for?! Couple of people that I've met who owns bmw's (rare) had no clue what dtmpower.net on my car meant.

However people with dsm's, subies, evo's seemed to know what it meant lol. They're like, "doesn't dtm for german cars?" whereas the bmw guys had no clue. Where is the dtm love here?!!! makes me wanna take off the sticker and put it on their car now haha

There are a lot more, and some of those you wrote aren't completely true. Some have more then one meaning.

This should sum it up pretty well:
Quote:
Following is a partial list of letter designations with some examples:

Suffix
A = automatic (2002A, 525iA)
C = convertible (325iC)
c = coupe (330Ci)
CS = coupe sport (3.0CS, 630CS)
e = eta (economy) engine in North America (325e, 528e)
i = injection (740i, 635CSi, 318i); or international (2002ti)
L = long-wheelbase (740iL, 3.0L); or light (3.0CSL)
lux = luxury (2000tilux)
s/S = sport (3.0s, 325es); also denotes coupe body in North America
(325is)
t/T = touring; touring could mean hatchback (318ti), wagon (525iT),
or sport versions of early models (2002tii)
td = turbodiesel (524td)
tds = intercooled turbodiesel (524tds)
X = all-wheel drive (325iX)

Prefix
L = luxury (L6)
M = Motorsport (M1, M3, M5, M6, M635)
Z = models developed by BMW Technik (Z13); roadsters (Z1, Z3)
X = All-wheel drive sport activity vehicle (X5)
As far as DTM is concerned, heres a post by Dado in the FAQs:
Quote:
The Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM-Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft or German Touring Car Masters) is a championship for the FIA class 1 touring cars. The cars have a maximum engine capacity of 2500 cc and are limited to six cylinders. The teams use V6 engines which produce between 420 and 450 bhp depending on which source you believe. The rules state that the engines have to be developed from a series model and keep the distance between cylinders' centers, the angle between two main bearings and the distances between the bed supports. The engines have no rev limiter and they currently rev about 12,000.

The chassis are loosely based on production models, but major modifications are allowed. The cars are either rear wheel or 4-wheel driven. Rear wheel driven cars have to weigh a minimum of 1000 kg and 4-wheel cars a minimum of 1040 kg. All the factory teams have ABS braking systems.

At the FIA meeting in Monaco on December 6, 1996 the 1997 (ITC) International Touring car Championship was officially cancelled. It was cancelled on the not surprising basis that there were not enough manufacturers willing to compete and no sign of agreement of any kind.

Hope this helps everyone out.

EDIT:

Here is ILiveToRide's update post from the former DTM FAQ thread:

Quote:
Cars: A DTM car is a no-compromise touring car designed specifically for motorsport with the silhouette of a four-door high-volume production car built up around a steel space frame. The bodywork is made of composites; the sheet steel roof originates from the production line. The driver sits in a carbon fibre safety-cell. Rear-wheel drive is stipulated, electronic driver aids such as ABS or traction control are forbidden. The minimum weight of a DTM car including driver, racing overall and helmet is 1050 kilograms. Numerous components such as the gearbox, prop shaft, engine electronics and carbon fibre brake discs are standard common components. The aerodynamic configuration can not be changed during the season.

Engines: Only V8 engines with a maximum capacity of four litres and without turbo charging are permitted. The power is limited to less than 500 hp by means of engine air intake restrictors. Only three engines per season per two-car team may be used. Standard fuel (super lead free).
