| mis-shifting ... mis-shifted a few days ago in my e46 320i, 2nd instead of 4th. i took it to the dealership and they did a compression test to find about 3 or 4 cylenders leaking, they said its not on warranty and will cost about $4k -wat do you think? -wat can i change in the engine to make it go faster since they aleady going to open it? |

| that sucks man, i've read alot of threads lately where people have money shifted their cars, as for making it go faster, i would see if u could get a larger motor...there is no replacement for displacement, but if thats not what ur interested in doing i'd got with a supercharger

| Not sure how much the dealer will want to do in terms of performance mods...sometimes they're awfully touchy about that sort of thing. Here's a site on shifting technique to avoid having this problem again: http://www.shortshifter.com/techniques2.htm |

| that was a very useful link, i pretty much always do that stuff but its good to review

| im thinking more of changing internals in the same enignee i.e cams, pulleys, and things like that, im not really thinking of swaping motors, i dont have that kind of money now ... why's it called a moneyshift by the way?? :S |

| Cos when you shift like that... say BYE BYE to all your MONEY. Anyone seen a run-through for a RHD? I cant exactly backhand the shifter TOWARDS me. lol Oh well, I can only see myself pulling the lever UP a gear accidentally, not down... which is a good thing I guess.

| Shouldn't the rev limiter have kicked in to prevent this?

The rev limiter can only prevent you from overrevving because you dumped too much air and fuel into the engine. The rev limiter can't do anything to protect the engine from overreving due to a bad shift because an external force is turning the crank too fast. I'm too lazy work out the numbers, but here's a scenario: Let's say I redline (7000rpm) in 2nd at 60mph. in 3rd, i need about 4000rpm to hold 60mph. I speed up to 70mph at 5500rpm. Opting for fuel economy, I intend to upshift to 4th, miss and end up in 2nd. Bad things happen: I was already at 7000rpm at 60, plus the 2500rpm i picked up in 3rd. Factor in the difference in gear ratios from 2nd to 3rd, and suddenly my transmission is trying to turn my engine at 10000rpm. I could cut the fuel supply (as the rev limiter does) but that will do nothing to stop my transmission from trying to turn the engine. Clear as mud?
