No muffler penalty?

So I was stupid and I order my new cat-back exhaust without the new gaskets/hangers/bolts. I got the old one off and the gaskets are in pretty bad shape. I am going to order the new gaskets monday, but the question is... should I leave the exhaust off and drive it with no muffler or should I put the aftermarket exhaust on and have to do all that labor over again. My two concerns, legal issues and damaging my vehicle. The car is loud, at idle it sounds like a flowmastered v8 and on WOT it sounds painfully loud.

Legal - I am not too concerned with getting a fix it ticket for a noise violation, those are cheap enough and correctable. My concern would be my car getting towed. I know there is a very heavy fine for no cats but this is a little different as a muffler is just a noise-supressant. Does anyone KNOW for sure what would happen in Cali? Its looks like its VC 38365.

Damage - I noticed the pipes end right where my gas tank is under my car, I dont want it to blow me up. Also will it burn out the valves etc driving like that for just a couple days?

I just gotta get to work and school and I do not want any problems... but have no other options other than putting the exhaust back on.

If you're a lazy person then dont spend the 15 minutes putting your exhaust back on. If you go that route then just prepare for terribly annoying rattles and whatnot while you're driving. The vibrations can be hell on your car over time, so dont do it for very long at all. Also, the debate over if you need back-pressure or not will live forever, but I say you don't need the amount being created by the exhaust system on your car.

I didnt have a muffler for a long time and all I got was a fix it ticket once when I got pulled over for supposedly making an illegal turn. He gave me a $10 fix it ticket. I am in San Diego, I dont think they will tow you as long as you have CATs. When you go in show the judge(or court assistant)that you have a muffler and you will have to crank it up to prove its not loud.

JESUS yes! it was so sick though, I had so many people as me what I had in it, some older dude with a barely street legal mustang followed me and told I should take it down to the track and asked me what was done to it. It makes your car vibrate a lot, one night I was shuttling these chicks over to a party one of my buddies a having and I didnt have my back seats in, and one of the chicks was all when you rev your engine it makes my pussy vibrate, so I really didnt see a problem with the vibration. But keep in mind I dont know what an e36 sounds like with out a muffler, but my e30 sounded pretty sick.

Has my M3 without an exhaust and its too freakin loud if you ask me. Its like being at a Lemans and having a Porsche pass by you. Its nice the first hour or so but then you want to kill yourself.

You weld down exhaust valves if you do it for a long time with no system from the downpipe, but i assume you only got the end removed since it is where the gas tank is.. so it should be okay.. and the gas tank is metal it wont blow up
