Exclamation straight six?

I still don't get it. What is the difference bitween straight six cilinder engine, and V6 engines??? Is one of them faster in acceleration or what is the diffeence. I know that in the straight 6 engines all the cilinders are next to each other, but is that all.
Guys let me know. Thanks.

its just the formation of the cylinders, you cant really say that one is better than the other or youd see all manufacturers making the same type of engine.

It depends on your definition of "better"

If you mean shorter and easier to fit in various cars - then a V6 is your choice. If you mean smoother (due to perfect primary and secondary balance) then an I6 is your choice.

BMW has chosen smoothness over short engine compartments. I think it's the right choice.

re

tipically 6 cly inline engines produce good amounts of torque compared to power, as apposed to v6, but how the cyl are set up isnt the only reason for that.
i6 seems to work well for bmw, i like the engine.

also, doesn't each cylinder have it's own position on the crank, rather that two cylinders on opposite sides of a V sharing a position? i heard about that adding to longevity and making it a better candidate for FI. Oh, and the oh-so-overtuned Supra utilizes an I6 engine...

An inline 6 engine is put very simply, two 3 cylinder engines mated symetrically to each other and therefore cylinder 1 will always be in the same position as cylinder 6 and 2 with 5 and so on so forth and as such balances itself off and doesnt require a balancer shaft.

The vertical and transverse forces generated by individual cylinders regardless of order are also balanced by one another and therefore produce virtually no vibration.

The other kind of engine that is as balanced as a I6 would be would be the boxer..

So in my opinion, i would say that smoothness/refinement is the primary choice when it comes to using I6's.

Its means just one head, only two camshafts, only one turbo is nessesary. Easier to work on aftermarket cause there is only one bank of cylinders.

Also a I6 has a more crankshaft flex, due to it being longer. I think that is why the S14 was only 4 cylinders.

yep the crank journals only have one cylinder per journal in an inline 6 setup where as a v6 usually has two pistons on one journal.
