I have a 1997 Bmw 328i and it has 98,650 miles on it. I just changed my oil using 10w 30 mobil synthetic for high milleage cars. It was a white bottle... is mobil 1 in a silver bottle? I need to know if it will damage my engine if i switched to synthetic since the car was using regular oil the last few oil changes. It had used synthetic oil in its earlier milleages as seen in the record book. If synthetic is the way to go what weight should i use... i live in So CAL.. thanx

I changed to mobil 1 syn 15w50 and havent any problems in fact the car runs great.

You should be using 15-40, 15-50. 20-50. Bmw likes thicker oil, 10-30 is too thin especially where you live. The only thing I have found out about syn vs. conventional oil is if the rig uses or leaks oil, it will probably use more due to the small molecular size of the syn. I use a high quality conventional 15-40 year around with no problems. Our '91 525i has about 182,000 miles on it and will maybe use a quart in between changes and I use the interval lights as a guide.
