| Mercedes-McLaren over... Mercedes and Mclaren are offically apart now. They didnt seem to get along to well. And Mclaren did not like Mercedes business practices, andway of markering.

| Just out of curiosity when BMW built the v12 that went into the mclaren F1.. weren't they considered partners already? or was that just temporary? and if so wtf happened that they decided to deal with mercedes instead. As I recall the mclaren company mades it's breakthrough with a BMW engine... |

But no, they were not partners at the time. Gordon Murray (who recently resigned from McLaren.. which is EXTREMILY sad) basically asked for proposals from a number of companies. Mercedes and others didn't even come close to BMW which I think exceeded HP numbers considerably (even today, over 100hp/liter on an engine that massive is simply unbelievable.) The creation of the SLR and the McLaren F1 are TOTALLY different. The F1 was from the ground up.. a McLaren. The SLR was a branch-off marketing venture by Mercedes and McLaren, and honeslty I think Mercedes had more to do with it than McLaren did. This is exactly the type of bond that BMW refuses to join in other companies with (even though they already have an aero/chassis company for Formula 1, so I think both sides were content.) The thing I find most ironic is that Mercedes is working for a company that was essentially put on the map by their largest competitor; BMW.

| Ya that's what I mean.. Like if you had previously done great by having an engine down by one company ( bmw ) why go to another? It's not say that mercedes is inferior, I am just wondering on the purpose. I know the SLR is a completely different car, I'm just curious that's all. I don't know much about the SLR so correct me if I'm wrong. The mclaren F1 was a naturally aspirated v12 as to the SLR is a supercharged v8 correct? |

| So who owns McLaren? Cause with Fiat having money troubles, and GM refuses to buy them Ferrari may not be looking all that good. At least Benz had much money to pump into McLaren if needed. I didnt like the partnership, but I'm concerned if they can keep thier head above water.

| in the case of the mclaren f1, that car was all mclaren, they just asked bimmer for an engine, and even then mclaren gave them detailed specs for the engine. thats why the f1 is to this day in a league of its own. the SLR was a bling sports car that mercedes felt they needed to make. not that i wouldnt enjoy the hell out it
