Do anyone know exactly what material process/motorsport wheel studs are? These are "VW racing" studs, Plated to resist corrosion. Rolled threads, "speed nose", Hardened steel. ![]() Last edited by LITEWAITM3; 02-07-2005 at 04:59 PM.. |

| Debating? When three of the studs are missing in three separate cases, what else would you call that? The wheel stayed on in two cases, and came off in one case. It's unlikely three studs in three cases all had symptoms you are talking about Jaffe.

| So when you removed the wheel in the pits, it only had 2 lug nuts on and 3 studs were entirely gone? Was anything left in the hub? And if it was a bad batch of studs, its very possible...milner ![]() We just had a bad heat treatment batch actually, bent a steering rack.... |

| Christ, from what i can understand, it was a disaster and there was nothing anyone could have done to fix it, same thing happened to the Citgo car when the 2nd gear blew up and they were done with no time left in the race. Anyways, Tom, did any other team had the same problem with the wheels?? cuz it sounds like its something that could have grounded other guys as well...anyways good luck. |

The porsche's seem to have run flawlessly as normal, they just have toouch experience with these types of races, they are friggin tanks. But I think if this stud problem was not there, ptg would have done very well! |

| Hey Tom, have you guys looked into the RRT studs? From our experience using them they have worked out pretty well. Then again club racing is nothing like Rolex or a 24hr. They seem to be built very well and from what i understand they are very strong.

| I wonder if the BMW motorsport studs cost more then the VW motorsport studs I posted above. A set of 20 (5x4) costs $400 ![]() I believe the problems a bit deeper then the actual wheel stud and moreso how the wheel is mounted, with it being a new wheel combo and whatnot. I'm sure the engineers at ptg will figure it out by the next race...might just require some extra drive pins, or maybe a new upright/hub configuration to relieve some stress in the critical failure areas. I would like to see the busted stud though, and see exactly what happened. You can basically determine everything from examining the fracture. |

| i also think it might have been stress fractures in the studs, and i think that the reason why this happen was that the change between flat surfaces (inside track at Daytona) and the entries and exits in the sloped banks...every time the car, goes from a flat surface to an angled surface it puts pressure where it hits the most, the wheels, and in PTG's case, it was the studs, but it could have been anything related to the wheels, like any of the two axls, but that would require much more stress. Oh well...lets get this problem fixed and win the next one, i was pissed that the final running order was like 5 million Porsches...lets DO this. |
