Buying/Selling/Pricing Modded Cars?

I've been looking around a lot lately since I'll definitely be buying a car by the end of this winter. Please explain to me why people insist on over-pricing their cars because of a few mods? I understand wanting to make some of your money back; but I'm not buying a car from you to pay for your mods. Part of the fun IS modding cars yourself; not picking up where someone else left off. I was looking through the DTM classifieds and I couldn't find many examples of people with realistic prices. I assume they want to get back the money they lost on modding. To me, buying a modded car, aside from light body/audio-video work, is preposterous. It just shows that someone else probably drove the f*ck out of it... and that means problems later that I'll have to fix. Honestly, most people know not to buy a modded car; so why sell one modded... or am I alone with this reasoning?

A friend of mine is selling his car. It has more than a few mods. But he's selling the parts for reasonable prices and giving discounts to those who can provide him with stock parts. Then when he sells/trades the car he gets top dollar at the dealership.

Why do people insist on trying to get interested parties to pay for the mods as well? Why don't people bring their cars back to stock and sell/trade the modded parts seperately?

If you aren't willing to pay modified car prices why are you looking at modified cars?

The market supports modified cars because people want those pieces on their cars, but they don't want to pay for the mods. Because of this people have one of two options - part the car out, and pretend to be a calm 40 y/o with a clean M3 that has never seen over 80mph, or sell it modified to someone willing to pay the premium. If you're unwilling to pay this premium look elsewhere - it's just that simple

I am looking at modified cars because they are in the mix of other cars. Unfortunately, the cars I am looking for are harder to find than I would like or they are extremely popular to modify.

lotsa times buying a modded car can get you the parts you wanna put on the same car for a lot cheaper. there are some definite deals out there...

if people try to sell those same modded cars to a dealer they wont get jack shit for it. Also if the person buying the modded car goes to the bank for a loan the bank wont give it to them because the car isnt worth that. the enthusiast think their car is worth so much more then it really is. some guy wanted 30k for his supercharged 95 m3....insane.

Then realize a modified car will sell for more, take note of the fact, and move on...

The 'mods depreciate your cars value' line only works at dealerships or on cars that aren't popular in enthusiast circles. If I mod my M3 and know someone is willing to pay that premium why am I going to sell it to you ? It's not a difficult concept.
