| bmw support my boyfreind and i debate all the time about nissans and bmws. now he thinks nissans are the best cars. nissans are pretty tight, i cant lie, but we compare them to bmws, its just a little battle we have whenever we talk about cars, anyways he told me that nissans have the best motor, the sr20det. the silvia motor, does 700hp at 20 psi all day no problems, he asked what bmw engine can top that, i dont know alot about engines at all. at least compared to the guys on this site, so i need some help here, cuz if im not mistaken 700hp at 20 psi is damn good! right? anyways, a little bmw tech support would be great. ![]() |

| ... Well the sr20det is a sick ass motor. It comes to my knowlege with a forged bottom half, and you could spray and turbo with no problems. One of the nicest stock motors. But BMW also has its line of tight motors, look at the e30-e36 m3, the e34-e39 m5 all bad ass engines. If you look on another post here there is an m5 with 1033 hp, and there are many bmw's with over 700 h/p. |

I'm a 4g63 guy myself but its a very simular idea. Iorn Block with forged internals + lots of boast (2.0 liter). a stock evo runs 19 psi and pushes ~280 crank, with optimized flow (tuned(~22psi)),turboback, frontmount, cams, ect.) people are pushing about 330awhp. No bad at all. but 700hp, forget it. I've never heard of 700hp sr20det, I'm sure they exist, but they are on race fuel, not streetable, and certainly not something you want as a dailly driver, not to mention that they are most likely dynoqueens that take forever to spool. Even bigger engines like 2jz(3.0 liter) require over 30psi to put down #s like 700hp, and its not just a matter of turning the boast nob, a lot of money is needed to make it reliable(i.e. run for more than 10 sec). Then there is the matter of putting all that power to the ground and having to wait for it to come. Your BF is just telling you stuff cause your a girl and he thinks that you dont know enough to call him on it, next time he starts talking 700hp everyday out of a 2 liter smack him in the head. HP costs money, american cars, japanese cars, euro cars, the more power you push the more its gonna cost to make and maintain. Making big power out of a turbo car is cheaper, but its not cheap, a lot of things have to keep getting upgraded with more power. The more boast the more your motors life is shortened as well as more spool up time. BMW is not about that, neither am I. 700hp is nothing without balance and controll. BMW makes a 900hp NA (3.0? liter, or was it 2.5) engine, they made a (1.5 or 2.0?) that made 1200hp with boast back in the day, its just that these are race engines that dont last long, idle well, or get driven on a street, probably much like the 700hp sr20. Then there is the new M5. Thats 500 streetable, practical, hp with no spool up time and a warrenty, all the japanese car makers start running when people talk about warrenties. Also dont forget to mention that the worlds greatest supercar is ///m powered. 10 years later and there is still nothing better. Last edited by Blackwidow : 08-23-2004 at 06:44 AM. |

| you are wrong. i think you are talking about the 1983 Brabham BT52, which was powered by a 4-cyl BMW engine. It had a massive turbo and pushed out close to 1400hp. The engine itself was based on the M10 and was just 1.5 litres. It wasnt the most reliable engine, and nobody really knows how much power it put out because the dyno went to 1250hp. It went right off! Also all mercedes arent supercharged, the only supercharged models are the AMGs and the C230 Kompressor. Also you cant really compare a Nissan to a BMW. I think Infiniti is more of a comparison than Nissan. |

| ... Infiniti and nissan are the same shit, they have the same engines. Most mercs are supercharged. or atleast the AMG ones, but the v12's are turbo. Any anyway bmw's arent made for dragging we dont need 800 hp. Ill bet u get any nissan vs a bmw on the track then you will really see what it a quicker car. |

| Let's not forget the McLaren F1 engine which is a BMW V-12 that pushes 650 HP WITHOUT a turbo. Well, hell, the Williams F1 makes 770 HP or something similar, where is Nissan? The poor guy thinks that a Nissan is the best since he has never had anything else to compare it to, so to him that is golden. I agre with Point 01.....

| why does everyone still hang on to BMW like they are the greatest car company in the world? once the E46 is out of production, there will no longer be any attractive looking BMWs. Whats worse is they are stuffing them full of useless and unreliable electroinics. Also do they not see that all of their new cars are ugly? I saw a white 350Z yesterday and though it looked pretty damn good. Then I saw a new 7 and almost threw up. I love BMW but I feel with the way they are going, they might not even be around in 10 years. I think Nissan builds great cars, but you cant really compare them to a BMW. For what they are, I really like Nissan but I wish they all werent FWD. |

Nissan is IMO japans greatest car maker. They are very good and I like them almost as much as BMW. BMW is heading in the wrong direction as we see it because we are driving enthusiast, we like light, nimble cars. Most people that buy BMWs like luxury and refinement, so BMW is moving in that direction. I'm a firm beliver that BMW will make a car that attracts people like us, I belive that it will come in the form of an ///M2. If not I'll refuse to buy any new BMWs. Lets face it BMW sells cars, goal #1 is to make money. We may not like the direction the comapany is now headed but there is no question in my mind that BMW has been, is, and will be, one of the worlds greatest engine builders, and thats what the original topic was about |

| ya, the S54 main bearing failure. absolute brilliance! also BMW is having a recall on the new 4.4 litre valvetronic V8s because they are using the nikasil blocks in some of them again. This isnt really what you have to expect when spending $50k on a car. A friggin honda V6 coupe looks better and makes more power than a 330Ci and costs about $15k less. If BMW keeps this shit up then they will be going down the tubes damn fast. |

If you'd take a Honda accord over a 330Ci go ahead, plenty of people buy 330s, otherwise BMW wouldnt make, plain and simple. I belive we are too harsh on BMW, we view everything they do with a huge lens and are quick to point out failures and things we dont like. I said they are one of the best, not the best, or perfect. If you dont think so than buy something else. I too loved the way BMW was in the 70s, 80s and 90s much better than now, but we cant bring back time can we. "the good old days" of no T/C, light, RWD cars are no longer, we must now live in the present. Cars are gonna get easier to drive and less raw. Thats how it is.
