is steam cleaning the whole engine bay a bad idea?

That all depends on if you care about your motor's rubber seals & hoses...

I have a little hand held steamer from Bissel and it works AWESOME on the engine bay. It comes with a few different brushes/attachments and gets the dirt out of all the cracks and crevices you cant get at.

Steam Cleaning the engine bay should be OK. However, make sure that you don't steam parts that are likely to be damaged, and don't keep the steam on an area for too long.

An engine bay can get pretty hot anyway...so I wouldn't worry too much about the steams heat on most of the engine parts.

I think our Honda gets its engine bay steam cleaned once in a while from the dealer.

If you have a old car just besure to cover up the wires and the distributor

Hell - I just power wash it, and put a little WD40 on some of the moveable parts to keep them from rusting while the water dries.
