in terms of bimmersi'd say an e30 with one of the inline 6 engines. just because its cheap and light. if your looking at going for something else, try an AE86 toyota, nissan sylvia, or nissan 180sx or 200sx. basically anything with good chassis ballance, rear drive, and a bit of power will do the job.

that and a lot of practice

300z or a 240. Rear Wheel Peel = a Good Time. I am trying to find a decent 240 right now so when I move to Florida in August, I'll be the Drift King.

You might want to save up from your Navy job and get to know your car first. Reconsidering how much money you'll have to put into if you want to practice drifting. Although it's really fun, it's not cheap. It's pretty expensive when things get outta hand. And you never know when this is gonna happen:

or this:

My 0.2 cents

Drifting only costs a lot if want it to. Get an old e30 and some wasted rubber from the local tire place. The tires are going to hell anyways. Might as well get every last ounce of rubber off of them. Only when you get good enough that you need all 4 tires the same (and are drifting on more than just parking-lot-practice).

I've seen a lot of european drifter do very well with BMWs. Check out http://www.8200rpm.com/index.php?p=6&t=1 for some great drift videos of e30s, 3 series wagons, e46 m3s, and the likes. If you have good drift fundementals, it doesn't matter what car you're in.

any good lightweight rwd car makes a good drift car. im getting better with my E30 drifting, you dont need tons of HP to make a good drifting car. the tope 3 drift cars are the RX-7 FD3S, toyota corolla AE86 or hachiroku if you will and the S13 and S14 silvias. Pick up a copy of the "Drift Bible", its part of the best motoring series and it is hosted by keiichi tsuchiya, the drift king himself, he teaches you all the steps to become a drift king. Along with what is needed and how you should practice. Its a really good DVD and covers all the aspects of drifting. The very basic drifting you can try is power over drifting, this is basically when you come out of a turn and floor the pedal. Once you get the hang of it then you will be doing it all the time. Also I wouldnt really consider a BMW as a good drift car, the parts arent exactly cheap and drifitng is hard on the LSD, wheel bearings and tires.

hmm.. where should i start...

--Why in the hell would an m3 break down in a drift? What in the hell are you talking about?

--Mark, it sounds like your talking out of your ass, and the only information you've ever recieved about drifting is out of "the drift bible".. all you named were the cars in the movie, and the power drift comment is obviously quoted directly from the movie.. And yes, maybe BMW parts arent as cheap as a corollas, but they are quality, and BMWs are extremely good track/auotx/drift cars... In fact, thats wut they are mainly known for outside of the luxary issue...

oh no no.. i didnt mean to insult you by the way.. but yes, i've seen the dvd, and i do like it, its just theres a lot more to drifting than whats on that dvd, in fact, a lot of people dont like that dvd because they think that using the e-brake is cheating, or "lame"...

ok sorry, man its all kool hey but it really hleps. my e-brake doesnt even work good on my E30, i have an LSD so basically i just give it some throttle. using the e-brake is not cheating, you only use it when the weight isnt transfering enough.

drifting wouldnt keep the BMW is good shape. I would want something thats cheap to use for drifting.

Thx a lot for the ideas guys. seems like most of the cars are nissan. I guess nissan is the way to go for that huh?

If you know how to take care of your car drifting will keep it in fine shape. The only maintenence you should have to do moreso than usual is differential rebuilding and making sure the clutches are all working in good order.

There's not much cheaper than an e30...

Of course people will say that the 240sx(its not a silvia even if you have the engine) because alot of people use them for drifting and thats cuz there are. But you cant forget about other cars. Pretty much and RWD car is game but a good handling car is also what you should look for. Drifting i more about the driver then the car. Ive seen people build RB powered 240's but dont have the skill to drift them, then someone who drives an AE86 gets in the 240 and drifts like crazy.
