Out of the shop for one day, then right back in......

Recently i Bought a 1996 328i. It was in immaculate condition and had about 70k miles on it. I paid 10k for it. The car had a cracked windshield, broken fog light, and needed a ball joint fixed, but the dealership covered it at no extra charge. They tell me I have a 1000 mile warranty on it, and during that time they will replace any part that malfunctions.
So anyway, im just cruising around downtown, showing my friends my car, because they called me up wanting to see it. Well i pick them up and we go for a cruise. A few minutes later, a blue dodge neon complete with a grapefruit launcher and generic body kit pulls alongside of me. Right away I knew the dude wanted to race, and I knew for a fact that I could decimate him. The kid in the car then starts swerving at me, repeatedly, and then flips me off. Right then he floors it, and I floor my car. the kid never pulled on me at all, and he quickly disappeared in my mirror. this kid. I start to head back home, and i notice that my water temp gauge is In the red zone, so I quickly pull over pop the hood and see whats up. There was Coolant sprayed all over the engine bay, and my radiator was steaming like crazy. I decide to call my friend to bring some coolant. He shows up and we head to the dealership and park it in the service lot, and drop the key and the information about the problem in the Night-time drop box. This is only one day after I got it back fromm the shop, and I'm really mad!

I have one question though. I know the Water pumps sucked on alot of E36 models, but did they replace the plastic impeller with a metal one before or after 1996? Also, does this sound like a hose busted or does it sound more like a water pump failure?

I believe the plastic impeller was replaced in 1999.

This happened to somebody i know like 5 times. He has the same car as you. The fan kept hitting and cutting the hose. The second time it happened, he had to replace the water pump, a couple of hoses and connectors, and the radiator.

its seems you bmw fans are not the only people with the plastic impellar failures, its seems vw wanted to make a really light water pump and it is and small by any comparison, but every time im doing a 70k service or timing belt replacement on a vw at my shop the impeller has broken off and its all inside the motor, what a fucking piece of junk i say.

make sure they check/replace the thermostat too. Once they are overheated they dont seem to work as well as they used to. You may see the temp gauge 'wondering' when driving the car.

Have your whole cooling system replaced. Mines was like that also, but around 80k on my 96 M3. the Radiator neck is generally where it snaps and spits fluid everywhere. CHange out your whole cooling system so you wont have to shell out cash to have it done. Or if you still have a warranty, I suggest you gettin an Inspection II done and make sure where ever your takin your car that they take it to someone that will do this Inspection II. Its a very specific look down on the whole vehicle. Generally this Ins II will cost around 800 at a bmw dealer/independent bmw tech. Then you can get all the things you need to be replaced

coolant all over the place sucks. It happend to my 1988 BMW and everything in the engine bay turned yellow and got this flakey stuff on everything. It was impossible to get off and looked really ugly. Make sure you clean everything really well so this doesn't happen to you.
