Water temp gauge not reading

i posted this in the e30 section also but it doesnt seem to be getting much action.

My water temp gauge goes up a little when it is powered up like to the begining of the blue but then stays there even when the engine gets hot. I switched the cluster and it still doesnt work. I tried touching one of the 3 wires that connect to the sensor to ground and it still doesnt go up. I tried seeing if there was continuity between any 2 of the 3 wires and nothing. What could be the problem? the wiring? if so is there anyway i can by pass it?

Sounds like it is getting power, but the gauge is not moving and you said that replacing the cluster did not help? Fuses, relays? Seems like you have a problem that is electrical. Haven't you been having some trouble for the past few months with the car? Fix any of the bugs? Try and clean all the grounds on the frame and engine, rust can be tricky.

yeah there is something wrong with one of the circuts that powers the gauges but i was able to by pass it. I just got this car not long ago and i have just finished putting it together. It looks like one of the relays might be missing. there are 4 different slots for it could i just hook them together with wire until i get a relay?

after i first got the car together i noticed it moved a little but then didnt move again.

does anyone know in what order the wires connect to the sender? i took one off to try and clean it and they all came off! i think ther is a green and a black and brown and black? and a black
