Slips out of gear

My car has slipped out of third gear under moderate acceleration twice in 5 days. I havent really gotten into it to see if it happens in any other gear, is this a sign of a bad clutch or am I looking at tranny problems? I will update this when I have the chance to run it out under power to 5th gear.

Could be synchros, third gear is the most used gear after all.

Sounds like it doesn't engage fully, and then just slowly comes out then goes pop as soon as the pressure comes off. Maybe?

No it is under acceleration.

I am assuming you are talking about your 98 M3 (list from your sig). If so, i had the same problem on my 99 M3 and the dealer changed out my tranny with a new one. It was under warranty at the time so not sure how much it would have cost. I had read in a Rondel magazine this past year of a way to fix this without replacing the whole tranny. If i find the artical i will give you more detail

Just thought I'd add my experience with E36 transmissions to this.

Just had my tranny and clutch replaced in my 94 325i, done at the local dealer, BMW of Towson, cost $3,000.

I have an old Bimmer mag where they discuss this problem. BMW liked to relpace the whole tranny but in reality the defective part can be replaced. Have your loclal BMW mechanic look at it.

hmm.. well i have same problem under hard acceleration usually when racing.. havnt replaced yet, since i am just going to keep it in there until it slips even when daily driving.. that way give me time to save up for a ltw flywheel and new clutch aswell.. anyhow, mine slips when i go pass 5k RPM or more and checked out to be only a clutch problem .. (thats wat my mechanic told me when i took it to him)
