Cool My "new" 83 944

I have followed the various "mod" path of many on this board. I've done the Koni/Eibach suspension, brakes, exhaust, stereo, etc. I do not want to turbo, supercharge or cam the M as I commute 80 miles a day in it. That said, I bought an '83 944 with 28,000 original miles as my new "tuner". I feel I can have fun with this car as I can leave it in the garage for weeks without needing to get it running by Monday morning. I am keeping the M3 of course, as it is still the best car I've owned. Here is a pic of the 944. I think some 18 inch Porsche replicas will make this car look 15 years newer. I am almost glad this car is a 150 hp 4 cyl, no more pressure to race everyone on the roads!!

Well it certainly is a member of the 'upper-echelon' of beaters... good luck with it, I don't know if a Porsche would be my first choice for a reliable commutter car though...

Porsches are the most reliable cars on the road. I would assume the ones from back in the 80s are still engineered as well.

I read somewhere that only 15% of the porsches ever build are not running on the roads today . That goes to prove how well built these cars are. I alwasy wanted a 944, you should have gone with the turbo tho. Nice buy none the less.

I've heard this statistic as well...though it was more like 65% are still running of all Porsches made. This (I don't think) includes cars that have been crashed or wrecked prematurely through driver error, not mechanical failure.

It's somewhere ON the Porsche site.

the regular 944 can be made into a handling superpower.. w/o a turbo its very slow, but it does make a great commuter car.

its reliable as hell, but the little things die (engine/tranny go forever)

be prepared though, the parts to fix it are very expensive.

best wheels- get the porsche 991 turbo twist wheels, or replicas..

That's a pretty good statistic...

I have a friend who owns a Porsche 930 & he spends his weekends with it on ramps or at the independent specialist... I have always heard there are frequent issues/bugs with the vast majority of porsches, and although fun cars they're not the most-reliable...

Don't be surprised when you get the bill for some small maintinence, but you did well to get a car with such low mileage Have fun with it!

I think he meant the BM was gonna be his commuter, not the porsche.

Cool car! I was never a huge fan of the 944 but I still like em. It should be a cool car.

Pic wont show for me. I have an 87 944S and love that car. You will find that the handling is pretty incredible with the 944 series. The pre 85.5 are not as nimble as the post butt hey still do fine.
Post some shots so we can all see, I have a few of my 944S up at http://www.wepc.us/porscheweb/IMG_1320.JPG this one is pretty big but its a great shot of the car.
Best of luck with it, yuou might want to go check out www.rennlist.com too!

28000 miles? Thats a great find, I ended up with a vW for my daily driver but I would drive a 944 in a heart beat, they are very reliable cars when taken care of.....

Good luck with her, just keep on top of the timing belt / water pump, and watch out for things like the AC unit, the sun roof, leaky battery trays ( water can get into the DME if your not careful ).

I'm sure you'll notice that the power steering leaks, they all do, even from the factory they had a bit of a fault there. But other than that I think you got a great beater, try and fix the link so I can see a pic....

Thanks guys! I have the same pictures in "my photo gallery". I love the seat position in the 944, very sporty. I will post more pix when it is officially on the road.
