Thats all you had to say. With the 6 speed, you can run a fairly aggresive rear end for good acceleration, yet still maintain civility for the highway. Some cars have very wide spaced gearboxes, an example i'm thinking of is a 944 Turbo. It has a 5 speed with long long gears; but in that car, since its a turbo motor, the widely spaced 5 s peed is a good match for the characteristics of the motor.
Conversely, if you are driving a 318, you need all the mechanical advantages you can get (no offense of course, i have a 4 banger too). Gearing is one of the best ways to 'overcome' the lack of power in a car.
