How to tell if a ti has lsd?

Hi Guys,

According to some sites, all ti trims comes with the option of lsd (at least the 96 and + ones). If true, how do you tell if a ti has lsd by visual inspection? Thinking of getting a ti soon (seriously)... and if anyone has one for sale, lemme know!! I already have a great ti in mind... but I am very low on budget, and if there are good deals out there, I might take it.

Thanks.... and no, I made up my mind... getting a ti or nothing, so no need to try to convince me to get a 325, can't afford it!!!

Do a burnout and see if it leaves 2 marks or one.

Next time you have your car up on a hoist, spin 1 of the drive wheels, if they both turn the same direction then you have LSD.

There is a tag attached to the diff. It shows the ratio and if it is an LSD will also have the letter S on it

Thanks a bunch guys! These info really helps a lot. I am planning on getting a ti soon, and it would be nice if I know how to check if there is lsd or not.

Ok, dumbass question... but where is the diff located at?? Sorry, as of now, I am one of those that slap on wheels/intake/muffler and think I have a fast car... trying to learn the real mechanics now.

get on the ground, stick your head near the diff and find the tag. Is there is an S, its an LSD. If there is no S on the tag it is an open diff.

diff is located at the back in the middle of the two rear wheels.

Thanks a bunch for helping out guys!! And no one talked trash about the ti yet, good! Also.. have another question

I also read somewhere the 95 ti's have the 1.8L M40 engine (SOHC), and the 96+ have the 1.9L M44 engine (DOHC), is there any truth in that?

The one I am thinking of getting is a 96 Sport... but the seller says it's M package... is there a diff?? And he also says there are M badges on the trim, would that be factory? The guy is honest so I trust what he says, but I am just asking people here to make sure. Thanks again!!

As far as I know, the only Ti's to come with LSD's were the 300 Clubsports made in 1995. I could be wrong though.

Yes its true the 95's have 1.8L M42 while 96+ have 1.9L M44. You can only get the M Package your car has is included in the "Sport" Ti. I have the same thing on my '97 and it is all OEM. Enjoy the car man, they are alot of fun...especially with M3 motors

Well... i hope to put in a bigger motor someday... but for now, the M44 will have to do (that is if the deal with the ti comes through first, of course).

The m42 that comes in the '95 is DOHC and puts out the same power as teh m44. They increased the displacement to cambat the stricter OBDII restrictions put inplace in '96.

My '95 Clubsport does have a limited slip. I believe is was only STANDARD in '95 on the Clubsport, but an option in '96+ on all models.

Good luck on your purchase! You'll love your ti.

A differential

The diff is the shiny part in this picture

The rubber parts on each side of it are CV boots, attached are the Axles. The diff carrier bushing is the black circle, top left of the diff.

Hope this helps,
