Flywheel Question! Urgent!

I have a 1993 BMW 325i with a dual mass fly wheel. My mechanic says you can have them resurfaced...CAN YOU???? And is it safe?

Yes you can and it is safe. When you resurface a flywheel it only removes a few one thousandths of an inch. It is just like resurfacing your brake rotor except more precise. The tiny difference in thickness will be adjusted for by the pressure plate.

When you drive a car hard the fly wheel will be come warped of develop imperfections, low stops, high spots and so forth. Resurfacing it makes sure that it is perfectly flat and will actually improve your clutch function.

Just make sure that who ever does the job is a reputable shop with lots of experience. If they mess it up you could be in a world of trouble.

So to sum up, there is nothing wrong with resurfacing the flywheel. It will increase clamping efficiency of the pressure plate and will put less wear on your friction plate. Just make sure you go to the right shop to do it. Maybe even mail it out to RAM or Centerforce, I am sure they resurface flywheels.

BMW recomends not to resurface the stock flywheel. You probably can get it done, but watch the thickness. Personally I wouldn't get it done, i'd just get a LTW fly.

what is a ltw fly wheel at where can i get one i also need a clutch kit they both are for a 1995 m3...... and i am also trying not to spend that much money so if u can help the email me at djs1009@hotmail.com

A ltw fly is usually a single mass aluminum flywheel that replaces the stock dual mass. A ltw fly plus a clutch will run you $800+. If you want to save money, just get the clutch kit.

Resurfacing the dual mass flywheel is possible, but do not do it. The metal shavings make their way into the flywheel and destroy it.
