| I did this in my 97 m3.Doing about 80 in 3rd went for 4th and nailed 2nd for like 2 seconds rpms hit around mid to high 8ks.Car ran like crap like it had 25 hp.Pulled over and shut car off.In tears thinking of how much damage I just did .Got the car about 2 weeks before this.I turned the car back on praying and the car did some weird stuff rpms went up and down went up to 1500 for like 5 sec and then back to normal.Car sounded ok so I drove it home. I took it to the dealer and they checked it out. They told me that its compresion was good and the computer didnt mark an over rev.I was like ok I knew the car hit close to 9k They said it ran like crap because I floated some valvs and when I shut it off and back on they went back down. Hope this helps out I was very lucky that my car is ok.But deep in me I will never feel like my car is back the way it was.I installed uuc tranny mounts after this and will be changing the retainers and springs soon when I do my cams.Because I know it wont take another rev like that again. |

| Skratch, The same thing happened to me but from 3rd to 2nd gear. The car was running on 3 cylinders but when I shut it off and start it back again the idle was very smooth, however, it did set a fault in the DME and the dealer found out because I had a check engine light due to bad O2 sensors and voided my entire drivetrain warranty. Compression and leakdown tests pass before I installed the turbo kit. |

| BMWGuy206, Im glad your car was ok.I know what it feels like doing this. How high did your rpms go and did the car feel the same after.I think its just me that my car dosnt feel the same my friend told me to give it an oil change and let it be a lesson. |

| It sems everyone did this from 3rd to second...BMW needs to go out and do this thn they'll get the picture. Do you have to replace your entire engine just because of one overrev?!

| how many people had a glitch where they went from 3rd to 2nd (even if not reving high, just a mis)... i drove the m for a year and never had a problem- even with other bimmers.. are you guys running short shift kits? |

| i tried to find info on this after i did mine. i think the general concensus is that the stock tranny mounts, when they start to wear, can allow the transmission to "flex" too much under load (high revs), and when the transmission moves inside the transmission tunnel, the gear pattern moves with it. hence, a pull backwards into 4th gear from 3rd actually becomes a pull into 2nd because the transmission isn't aligned properly. depending on how hard you hit it, you might get away with it, you might just cause minor damage, or (like me) you might destroy the engine. aftermarket tranny mounts (like uuc) and/or short shifters seem to be the best defenses. nate
