Resistor trick? and makeshift cai? Hi! my friend owns a bmw 325 i e something 25 is it? he said its a 1986-8 model. anyhow, i was looking for some dirt cheap "mods" that he can try out on his car. i remembered reading about a resistor trick that fools the IAT sensor into thinking the engine is getting colder air. Is this possible to do on his car? and how would i go about doing it? what wires do i tap into and what size resistor do i use? and another thing, he also wants his car to have a little meaner tone to it. we bought him a cone filter and some tubing, however we stopped designing the intake when we ran into problems connecting it to the huge sensor thing that was stuck onto the air box. is there a way to take the sensor out? or even bypass the sensor? we ran the car without the sensor without much luck, as the car died instantly after cranking. thanks for all the help! ![]()

Do some research on the net (www.google.com) and you should be able to find some information on it.

| i dont think it would work because it would think its colder when its not causing it to put more fuel in the mixture and less air. that would make it run to rich and you would lose performance. someone correct me if im wrong.

yea, i agree with dinanfive. if you trick your engine into thinking its getting cold air when its really not your gonna f*ck up all your air fuel ratios and kill your performance while at the same time waste tons of gas with no real results. just install a CAI and put cold air into the engine instead of tricking your engine into thinking its getting cold air. but thats just my 2 cents

well, i was planning to install the cold air + resistor trick. ive searched online for the info, and it just says to leach off of the IAT sensor. it is also very vague in what youreally are supposed to do. also. how in the world do you get around that airflow sensor? one side is square, making it impossible to hook up any round tubing to it. however, taking it out of the loop disables the car completely. ill ditch the resistor if i can just figure out how to mount the cai.

im thinking just stopping by the hardware store once again.. buy a metal tube.. lightweight but strong.. and use some of the leftover sheetmetal that i had. cut a hole in it, solder pipe on. then hose clamp it to the intake tubing. does solder stick to aluminum?

take a metal rasp or a metal file and file the aluminum so it's rough and then solder to that. polished metal is HARD to solder to make sure you do the same with the sheet metal so the solder will hold.
