i just had to replace my digital climate control... symptoms are: unit turns on and off by itself, when it's off, the green airflow distribution lights stay on but nothing happens, the display is barely readable, or not at all. when it shuts off, the a/c comes on, and all controls go dead. don't know if thats what you are experiencing or not but if it's doing that, it's toast. i just had to replace mine, and i've talked to about 20 people over the last month who have had or are having the same problem. there are loose solder connections inside the unit. in fact, my dealer told me that bmw changed manufacturers for the part because there were so many going bad and he was surprised mine lasted this long.. for a while, a quick smack on the dash would fix it, or turning the car off and on again, but i just got tired of fighting with it and having no defroster when i needed it (yikes). the unit from bmw will cost you around 300 bucks, and count on an hour of labor because it has to be programmed by the dealer, it's not just plug and play, which sucks, cause it's simple to remove and replace yourself. i ran into a guy who's made a hobby of fixing the units, he's done quite a few, he did mine and he's quite good, and stands behind his work. he's not cheap, but it's better than 400 bucks.
