At the speed that accident look like it must have happened at, his insides were probably so rearranged by the impact it wouldn't have mattered if the motor came through the firewall and hit him in the head, he was probably dead on impact.
Thats why most race car drivers, even in BMW CCA club racing are wearing HANS deviceses, they are even talking about making them mandatory.
