Speed isn't what kills; it's acceleration that kills. That's why cars aren't build on completely rigid frames; you'd die much more easily because the car wouldn't crumple and wouldn't absorb some of the energy with which you were travelling with right before the impact. I actually might go into AutoDesign and I hope one day my work either helps people go faster or go safer and if fate turns a odd twist, perhaps both ![]() As for this incident - very sad but going fast has its risks unfortunately ![]() |

| "Thats why most race car drivers, even in BMW CCA club racing are wearing HANS deviceses, they are even talking about making them mandatory." //////////////////////////////////////////// What are HANS devices?

| Just to put a little closure to this story.... This is to the best of my knowledge from a thread I read a long time ago. The guy was a member of Roadfly.org I believe. He lived in South Africa and he was heading home with his girlfriend when a person driving drunk in a Mercedes swerved at them. He moved over but didn't see the light pole. I heard he hit it going like 80 or so (can't recall correctly), and he died instantly. I do believe that the girlfriend survived however (though I may be wrong). I just didn't want people to think that the driver died due to stupidity. It was just a freak accident and it's really sad that shit like that happens because of someone else making the decision to down some alcohol. Drink responsibly guys and have a designated driver!

A HANS device is a head-restraint that connects your helmet to the seat. This helps prevent whiplash (what killed NASCAR driver Dale Earnhart). Most professional racing leagues require the HANS device to help save lifes. And no device would have saved this person's life in this case. It was up to God or luck (whichever you believe in). -Ducky |

| Well, I don't understand. How can racecar drivers walk away from crash wrecks over 100 mph if there is no chance in hell this man could, assuming he was going 80?

| You must grasp the nature of each crash. Many racecar crashes do not happen into a solid pole or unmovable object. Usually the car crashes into a soft-wall (tirewall, foam wall, hay-bail, etc.). They are designed to absorb some of the impact. Also, the chassis are made alot stronger the most road-going cars with the empasis on safety. The car can be totally destroyed but the roll cage will remain intact. When the driver of this M3 crashed, he did not hit a tirewall nor did he have a roll cage to protect him. He hit a pole/tree that did not move and the car absorbed ALL of the force of the crash. This is known as a "Fixxed Object Crash". -Ducky
