how long does your clutch last??

whats the average lifespan of your clutch?

i have 2 friends that need clutch changing right now... one is at 80k miles and the other at 44k (miles on the clutch since the last one replaced)

big difference, almost 2X..... but i wanted to know what the DTMr's had..

It really depends. 44,000 miles for a clutch is pretty bad, shouldn't have gone out that fast. The driver may have downshifted obsessively, rested their left foot on the clutch pedal, or just have gotten a bad clutch. You should make sure they checked their master clutch cylinder, just to troubleshoot.

Mine has lasted almost 110k miles, but is seeing it's last days. Then again, it's a Honda... and Hondas are good like that

I have 93k on my clutch right now. Still feels great with no chatter or slipping. Then again I only have a little 1.9

should last 100k+

Yea a defect free original clutch as long as not abused should last around 100k miles. Do not sit at the lights in gear, do not hold at friction point (when waiting on an up hill road some people hold the car stationary by using the drive as brake), and never hold at friction point and at the same time get the revs up above 2.5k (a great way to wear down your clutch that I've seen people do), and of course burnouts after a launch from high revs, all hit your clutch hard (well the burn out probably will hit the tranny harder than the clutch depending on how you do it, but that is another story).

when i first got my car it had 80xxx miles - still had original clutch. after about 8000 miles of owning it i had to replace it.
about 20000 miles later, it had to be replaced again. I think some of this is due to me driving it somewhat hard.. but not hard enough to go THAT fast...i feel it was just a bad part...
so i replaced it again and im now sitting at 160,000 miles. Clutch still feels pretty good... it has a high catching point now, but still grabs good. I still drive it hard but it has lasted me much longer. So i feel it really depends on the clutch itself..
both times i replaced the clutch it was the same 'brand' or whatever clutch. nothing high performance or anything. just something that was similar to OEM.. if not OEM.

mine (94 325is - essentially stock) went out around 60,000 miles, but it was doing pretty good until i messed up.. launched with revs too high in a race, and hit the gas too hard before it had time to catch - the clutch literally shattered into a bajillion pieces.
We replaced it then, but my dad had the work done at a shop i didnt know, and they used an inferior replacement clutch, now just short of 80,000 it's getting pretty bad again. In 5th on the highway, if i press the gas quickly - as if to pass a car - it just slips and i fly to redline. Also in 2 or 3 under hard driving it will slip way more than it should. I suspect that within another 10K it will need replacement. I would expect the stock clutch to last until 100K easy based on my friends with similar cars and my own experience, but hard driving or a bad replacement will kill it quick.

I drive like shit. I drop my clutch all the time. I drive in traffic and shift alot. I probably ride the clutch once in a while, I am certainly not that careful.

I just replaced the original clutch after 45K miles. It was worn, but not all the way dead yet, maybe I coulda gotten another 5K out of it.

So - as a benchmark: If you drive your car real hard like i do 45-50K miles is a realistic clutch lifespan. You good drivers out there (not me) can get 80K or more.

But heres a question, Automatic cars still have a clutch right? I mean u cant use it but the function is still there, why dont u have to ever replace theirs?

Mine lasted 63K, but I drive the car hard and used to go to the drag races all the time. Launching simply kills a clutch.
