High mileage e36 Turbo/charger

ok, my 97 M3 has 89k miles on it... thinking about a SC or turbo once i can scrounge up some money. What I would like to know (from any F/I owners with high mileage), is how many miles are on your car now, and how many miles ago did you go F/I?

I know, I can always put a new engine in there later if mine blows up, but would i have to ship my car to Florida for AA to tune it again?

Also, would I want to rebuild my engine BEFORE adding a turbocharger? how much does something like that run? Seems like a lot of *extra* or hidden expenses with going F/I (such as needing stronger clutch, RTAB's, installation, etc.)

Oh yeah, and how much did it cost to install the turbo or SC?

Thanks!

There is a customer who has a 95 M3 with over 90k miles and AA did a compression test on the engine. The results were 190 psi on all cylinders.

He was about to get their SC kit but is now going to get their Stage 1 turbo kit.

From what I hear the labor for the SC kit is abour $800-$1000. Turbo kits range over $2500.

I turbocharged my M3 at 59k miles. I now have 80k miles and the car runs great!

Compression needs to be within 7 psi of each other. The overall number is not as important. They can vary in how you perform the test.

My car has almost 88k miles on it with a stage 1+ gen 2 kit from AA thats been on for about 2 years and 25k miles. No problems you wouldn't have without the kit, makes almost 300 hp/tq at the wheels and still gets mid-hi 20 mpg numbers on the highway. I get around 19 mpg daily driving to work.

I got my superchager around 74k miles. I have currently 82k miles no problems yet. I get about 23 mpg highway and 19 city driving.

Sounds like I need some F/I!

how much did installation cost or how much time did you spend installing it?

What other items are *recommended* while adding a turbo? (such at RTAB's or M5 clutch)

you can just replace certain parts of the engine, get the block port and polish, maybe mess with the rods and pistons etc, if you wanna lower the compression etc, to give more life to the engine

Compression test first if its good? Go for the turbo. Plan to rebuild the bottom end for more boost in the future. If you go turbo...put a custom 3in exhaust on it...for about the 1/2 the price of the AA Gen III exhaust and Track pipe.

supercharged at 60,000
aa turbo stage II at 93,000
aa turbo stage 2.5 at 103,xxx
currently at 111,xxx and stillrunning strong

51,000 miles of FI = priceless

Call me lucky, but I did all the work myself with the help of my buddy. AA with give you a base chip with the kit to get it started. Then you get it dynoed and fax them the results then they go from there.
