Description of Vanos for bmw's

Can anyone give me a detailed description of Vanos and how it works. I have it on my Bimmer, but didn't think anything of it because i never knew what it was. Ducky mentioned it earlier in some post relating it to VTEC, variable valve timing and lift electronic control. I know a bit about VTEC, but i heard Vanos works in a different way, and not in the Camshafts. But I'm still clueless, so any information would help. Thanks
