| RMS supercharged Ms I think it is wrong to do this to a classic NA engine optimised by the folks at M but what would I know. They are on the market now I believe, and Dinan intends to release their own supercharger for the m3 next year. ![]()

| $9000 US installed, "450 hp to the crank" at 6 psi - by the time it gets to the wheels its just more sht bang for buck from the aftermarket if you ask me. Not to mention that is a surefire way of screwing up all the refinement and smoothness you paid big bucks to the m factory for. Might as well get a japanese FI car cause this aint what these cars are about. Its just not a real M engine anymore (in my not so expert opinion). edit - the numbers relate to the M3, I think the blue one is an M5.

| I dunno about this - I agree with Vinnie... This engine has been optimised already how much will this impact on its life??? I read an article in BMW magazine (UK) where they had an M5 engine and through cams, exhaust, chip and intake had achieved a 100hp increase (400 --> 500HP at the crank). That is a much better option if you want to go faster in an M!! ![]()

![]() I'm pretty sure that you will get more gains going with FI than you would through cams, chip, exhaust and intake mods though... |

| Oops... sorry ABX18Z... I'm sure you'll be happy to accept the credit for the comment though... ![]() As for faster - for sure - FI is always better than non-FI, but i'm talking about preserving your engine's longevity while going faster AND only talking modest to medium gains for modest $$$ ![]()

memba my dads car bohr??? 180RWKW, atmos most hard stung jap turbos running in excess of 15 pound cant produce those figures out of a 4potter just food for thought personally i HATE turbos, NA all the way ![]() |

| I've heard alot bad things bout RMS and their work except for a few guys who shell the big bucks for custom work. The E46M3 is having enough problems N/A let alone FI, I think the E46M3 shouldnt be tinked around much mechanically let the E36 people do it. |

| Hey don't bothing giving the jap cars shit. They make some of the strongest standard engine in the world. Not too many engine can run 600 hp through them like the 1jz with out touching the bottom end. my lil sr20 they say are good up to 250 RWKW without forgies. So you just leave the jap engine alone. The rest of the car is not so good but the engine, no problems.

| I agree with alot of the stuff on this thread and have also always hated turbos with a passion. Each to their own, but not for me thanks. I would always prefer my HP to be NA for the performance characteristics (look at an sti performance curve against an M or porsche) I would also prefer predominantly factory HP so that the performance characteristics are properly considered and not just largely a suck and see result or long term trial and error (ie give me a 340v8 mobile over an aftermarket Fi anyday irrespective of cost and HP). I will only end up with big HP when my budget will allow me to get the kind of performance and drivability that you buy from a good factory. I hear from "experts" that it is easy to get big hp from an engine by sacrificing NVH (noise vibration harshness) and drivability. EG I read that setting up plenum tubes on the intake of an NA engine can give good max power numbers for HP whores, but it can be impossible to live with daily. Enter BMW - The old M5 managed to re engineer a manifold or something to give apround 240kw from the old six and still keep it silky smooth with good low rev drivability. As far as japanese cars go, im a nissan fan and had an n14 and n15 sss. Fast and powerful yes but the idle was rough as guts which I found embarrasing when I had passengers and tiring the rest of the time. And the ride and handling were below what you should have expected from a car in the 90s. I regularly want to place an order for the new z (M3 acceleration for 320 price) as we need a second car but I know that the performance will come at a large sacrifice of smoothness and comfort if not balance. It sounds trival, but over time it becomes a real bore in comparison to the glass of water on block engine smoothness of a BMW (M or not) or lexus or any other maker that goes for quality over quantity when it comes to HP. I also couldnt do without the alloy supension, low unsprung weight, overdone chassis and suspension, obsessive weight distribution and ride vs performance balance of the BMWs. My car has the same 105kw as my old nissans but the quality and delivery of that power, together with the handling and ride, is why IMHO real BMW enthusiasts buy BMWs over other cars. *super rant mode off*
