VANOS problems...

Ok I have asked this before but no one replied. Is there anyway to maintain your VANOS unit? I have a 93 325i and I was wondering what I could do for my VANOS before it went out. If not could I get a used VANOS unit and if I do how do I check to see if it is any good.
