Unhappy my vanos died

Need to replace the whole Vanos unit , Could someone tell me how much it cost (parts+labor) to replace the Vanos unit at the Stealer??

How much is the vanos unit itself (new and used)? Where to find the cheapest?

Thanks in advance!

A new vanos from the dealership will cost about $280, which does not include the chains or tensioners. I have done a lot of research on this becasue my vanos was making noise after I installed M3 cams. Install will be around $300-$400 because they have to take out the engine cover. You should also replace the engine cover gasket, while you're at it. The gasket costs $30. Are you sure your vanos is dying??? DOes it shake and vibrate when you accelerate???

.. v B .. maybe the cams killed it. i don't know . sh*t happens.

Dinan325ic,. I can hear this loud vibrating noise and it shakes quite a bit if i kept the rpm exactly at 1500. My mechanic tried putting in the updated "piston" inside the vanos, that didn't worked. I am going to meet up with my mechanic and take a look at the vanos tomorrow. I will let you know if it is the cams that killed it. I heard that it is normal for Vanos to make noise as they age, by looking at your dyno graph, i doubt that you need to replace your vanos.

Genie_Tinik thanks for your help, i will pm you if i can't find one locally.

A rattle at exactly 1500 RPMs is the lower timing chain tensioner, not the VANOS. Have you tried replacing it yet? It's WAY cheaper than a VANOS unit too.

I always thought that the rattle was causes by the vanos. I will look into that tomorrow! thanks!

By the way, my mechanic took the vanos off already, he said he will show me which part is sticking tomorrow. How can i know he is telling the truth? Is there anything that i can do to check the vanos?

M52 - Probably no easy way to check the VANOS after it's off the car, but I bet that once it's back together with the new until you'll still have noise.

Yeah man, i feel your pain. I got mine replaced 2 months ago. For my car, parts alone for the Vanos unit was about $500, plus $700 for labor

Geesh, they screwed you on that. The VANOS unit is under $300. There's no way the replacement gaskets cost another $200 and there's no way they should've charged 10 hours of labor for just the VANOS install

the book states like 6hrs for the vanos. i still have a tick in my engine, even after i switched the vanos, and lower timing chain tensioner, and checked for the sparks plugs tightness. next on the list is lifters since my mechainc screwed me when he replaced the old vcg and had a lot of oil drain out the back of the motor.

It was only about 7-8 hrs actually. Shop was just crazy ass expensive... And yes, one part of the Vanos unit was 300... then i guess there were alot of misc pieces they needed to order as well, hence the extra $200.
