Vanos came the the 3 series in 1993, it is varible valve timing, like vtec is to hondas Vanos is to bmws. They switched to OBD2 because of emmission issues.

No, vanos is variable valve timing, but nothing like vtec. Vanos alters the timing on the intake cam only. Vanos in the e46, e39, e38, z3 all used the double vanos motors, intake and exhaust

Obd I was phased out due to more strengent emissions requirements, and the fed implemented obd II.

Actually, not all vtec alters both intake and exhaust, like the eariler vanos, the eariler vtec only alters the intake cam only. I can be wrong, but this is what i've read, and a mechanic that works on hondas told me. So how is vanos nothing like Vtec? they both alter valve timing...

no, vtec isn't about timing. Vtec is basically putting 2 cams on one. There is a less aggressive lobe for low rpm tq and at around 5500rpm, it uses oil pressure to switch the rockers to the more aggressive lobe. Which is more aggressive allowing for more hp and better breathing.

Here is an article about vtec:

and you are wrong...DOHC VTEC changes both intake and exhaust...but its not cam/valve timing like VANOS. VTEC switches to a higher lift/longer duration set of cam lobes at a specific RPM, but the timing remains the same.
