I have been looking at 944's as a track car/daily driver and need to know what you fellas think about this car. Reliability, power ect...... Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

We were going to get a 944 turbo race car, but E30 m3 in jstock form is better, and if you want more power, then move into a prep/mod class. 944 is a bit cheaper, but it's not as reliable. E30 m3 is expensive to fix, but decently reliable once you get a solid setup. Jstock is also competitive, probably the most, but most of the top guys are not following the rules. PLan to run evo cams, cam gear, head works, etc.. if you want to be competitive.

951's can be wicked, wicked fast provided the proper modifications.. but be prepared to pay P-car prices for parts, modifications, AND labor. One of my best friends has a tuned 951 turbo..

Hopefully Ian will chime in on this thread..

i race 944s all the time and my frined has one built a little to race but its a steet car. they have better arodynamics than the 993 and they handle pretty good. there a really popular track car and porsceh offers the best track events( i think ). so i would go with the porsche, but your never gona get it to go real fast like you would a 911 though. my frined has a turbo 944 with 600hp and 14inch slicks on the back but there always having a problem with it and never get to run it good.

a 951 can make a great, inexpensive track car. you can pick up fine examples for $10k, bout $1500 in mods and you can have 300+ hp easily. They handle and brake wonderfully stock, and there is a relatively large aftermarket for them.

My cousin bought a Turbo S, I forgot what year, I think 87 like 4 months ago. He has 2 performance chips(the 2nd one for the turbo). That's it. That car rolls like a mother.

He destroys me EVERYTIME. I just have exhaust, but these can easily break 12's with like 2 or 3 mods.

He's buying a mass flow sensor next.........I probably won't see him in sight once he gets that installed.

Definitely worth buying. The car is a PURE sleeper and will devour all these big V8's with a couple simple mods.

Good Luck.

Thanks for all the post guys!!!

Im not really into making it into a sleeper/street racer. I just want a good auto-x/track car and this looked like a good option. I dont really want to be paying p-car prices after hearing some horror stories, but i still might consider it. My mod wish list would inclue C/O's, Free Flowing exhaust, nice intake, racing sways, roll cage, seats ect.... not really gonna be trying to top 12's, but thanks anyways.

with the right intake (MAF) and exhaust and software, that car should run high 12's at least, and handle like a muthaf*cker

". rage2, Porsche 944 Turbo, 12.7@117"

This is a time from my city, Calgary which is near the Rocky Mountains, elevation was about 5000 ft i think, and the car is not highly modded, this is an example of what those old 944's can do. At see level the time would be much better.

NOw yall got me thinking. Maybe just using the M3 for the track and making the 944 into a strip hog. HMMMM interesting.

thats a bad idea. yeah you could do that, but the 951 handles so well, it would be a damn waste of car. A properly driven 951 with bolt ons will definately hang with e36 m3s at the track. add some brakes and a larger turb0.....well you get the idea.

This car is actually pretty heavily modded, 944s are very tough to launch. Rage's mod list:
