Vanos or no Vanos......?

i see some people liking the non-vanos 325i and some liking it more. correct me if im wrong, but vanos is variable valve timing on the exhaust cam, creating a higher exhaust gas velocity coming out of the combustion chamber, therefore resulting in higher torque all around. much like vtec on a honda motor, this seems like a good idea. aside from forced induction, why would you not want this to be on your bmw?

Vanos or not vanos ?

Variabelen Nockenwelle Steuerung (Variabel Cam Timing) is a way to get better overall performance out of the engine. The Singel Vanos only adjusts the intake cam and it's used to tame the camtiming of a, for normal streetuse, too wild cam so it can be used for normal streetuse. It let's the engine idle decent by reducing the camoverlap and also it will produce more torque at lower rpm's. The vanossystem works from Idle up to 6000rpm and it's also used to govern the max speed of 155mph in the M3 for instance.
The newer Double Vanos has adjustment of both intake and exhaust cam. The addition of the exhaust cam timing is for emission and economy only.

There is no reason you wouldnt want it, people who dont have it just like to think that to make themselves feel better, if it wasnt good BMW wouldnt have created it and put it on their cars. Also if it wasn't good the Evo II Euro M3's wouldn't have DUAL VANOS instead of single VANOS like in the US .

Your car has single VANOS, No E36 US SPEC M3 has Dual VANOS, only the EVO II European M3's had the Dual VANOS, so to answer your question you have single VANOS.

for a highly tuned engine, it doesn't help much since you shift enough to keep the engine in higher rpms. (read "highly tuned" as "race")

it's more complicated, more things that might break. and heavier, not weight of the car, but weight of the valve train, extra weight hurts throttle response. and it makes the power less linear, you don't want the power at the wheels to spike right in the middle of a turn and spin you.

so the difference is the torque and what not, but can you actually feel a difference between a vanos and non-vanos car? or is it just evident on paper..........?

VANOS the GRAPH.

Here's a graph below with the hp and torque of the Euro M3 3.0L engine (S50B30). Hp is in KiloWatts (multiply with 1.4 to get HP, roughly) and Torque is in Nm (devide by 1.5 to get FtLb, roughly).
Anyway, you can see that max. Torque is from 3500rpm up to about 6000rpm almost constant and if you don't use blowers or a turbo it's unpossible to create such a torque-curve (this is not a curve but a straight) without the VANOS system.
So I would say the only ones that say they don't wanna have it are the ones that don't HAVE it and the ones that have it are the lucky ones.
Okay if you have a race car with a typical rpm range between 6500 and 8500rpm or higher you would use the VANOS only during start or during a lowspeed first gear turn or at a pitstop and then you could ask if the complexety and extra weight are to bare in favor of the 'low'speed torque.
But in case of the daily driver / groceriegetter that only sees max shift-rpm only once in a while, make sure you have it!! You are far better of with it.
Grtz M3GTDRIVER.

p.s. The race M3 I work on, uses the same VANOS system since 1993, with no problem. max rpm about 9000rpm.
