custom turbo

has anyone done a custom turbo setup on their e36 3 series? how much would it run me to try this. etc etc.. the more info the better.

What kind of custom turbo are you talking about? You can simply go to www.Activeautowerkes.com for turbos for E36's.

oh i know about aa. im just thinking, maybe its possible to get all the parts neccissary for the job from other places... and in the end possibly spending less than the 10k.

last time i heard...Dado was custom making his own turbo
but that was last august...i dont know whats going on with him and his car try PMing him

Oh, in that case, maybe. I was planning on doing when I was ready for a turbo with AA. I was going to get a Turbotechnics Turbo or Greddy one and also a Greddy FMIC. It is possible, you just have to look hard enough.

if i just got a greddy or turbotechnics turbo, could i just buy all the piping..and all the other shit needed from other places, would it be considerably cheaper to do it this way.. rather than spening 10k on an aa turbo kit.

It would definitely be cheaper to do your own turbo but the piping is pretty hard to make. You'll need lots of pipes with various mandrel bends lying around for prototyping to make custom pipes unless you have access to a mandrel bending machine. If you go with making your own pipes, you'll need to know how to cut and weld. Also, lots of clamps, straight and various angle silcone connectors. You'll need all the flanges, have the right length oil feed/return lines and lots of vacuum tubes. Lastly, you'll need the turbo w/internal wastegate if you can fit it, or external wastegate and a turbo manifold which you can attain from Turbonetics. If you plan everything out, it's possible to do this for around $3-$4K depending on the components you choose and the price you get for such components.

im not sure how it all works. but does a manual boost controler do the same as the software.. ie.. tell it how much boost etc...

Boost is not controlled by the ecu, you control that with a boost controller.
