Supercharge / Turbocharge

I had posted a new thread earlier on asking what mods i should get for my E36 318i Convertible and someone replied saying "get a supercharger"

1) is a supercharger recommended on a 1.8 engine?

2) and why supercharger and not a turbo? don't superchargers need more maintenance? also i heard a turbo covers most of the rpm range.

p.s if anyone has any other suggestions on how i should spend my money on my 318i please tell me what you think.

Generally, a turbo can be over a wider RPM range for us ^ cylinder guys, because an Eaton (Positive Displacement) blower is not available. However, for the 4-cylinder, Downing Atlanta makes a very nice, reasonably priced SC kit, which will provide boost at all RPMS. SC's are generally more reliable than turbos, especially in aftermarket fitment (or so ive heard in talking to mechanics).

i would second that, i've heard nothing but good things about downing atlanta's supercharger for the 1.8...they were supposed to come out with something for the 3.2 but it never happened.

Yes you can. Since a turbo charger is powered by the exhaust and the sc is powerd by belt it has been done befor. If you did put a turbo and a sc on your car it would fly. You would have lots of power in the low rpms from the sc, and lots of power through the high rpms because of the turbo. The only porblem is that most engines cant take that much compression, even if you got new parts and everything your engine would probebly blow in like 2 or 3 months.

What type of figure are we talking with DA Supercharger on a 318is.

How come you dont see any Twin turboed BMWs out there?

It's a more complicated setup and I'm pretty sure cost is another big factor. 11 grand for one turbo imagine two turbos.

An engine swap is a good idea, but there is a large can of worms that gets opened when you do that. tranny, electronics, differential, suspention. all things you must consider and possibly modify to accomodate the additional power and/or weight. however if you have the time and money a swap can be good in the long run because the power capabillities are much higher than that of the M42/44. korman makes a turbo kit that produces 182hp and 187lb/ft of torque that costs around $4500. Downing atlanta's S/C kit costs about $3400 and produces 210hp and 200lb/ft of torque. turbo will require more maintainance and care. the S/C will make more usable power all throughout the rev range. if you want a reliable and pratical power jump the S/C is your best bet.

hi i drive a 318is 2dr but my car is slow~~~~~~~~~~~~!like hell

i wanted to change my car to an 328 2dr but it's a hassel so

Im getting supercharger too....but i heard from my friends

that it shortens the engines life/or its not good for the engine?
is that true? if so what.....?

what kind of maintenance do i have to do if i get a s/c?

well its not great for the life of the engine but hey,its better than turbo or NOS anyway I think im getting an M3 or a 328is
