Well, other than labor costs and vehicle down time, there's the lower compression so you have a bit more lag but then again the high boost setting will make it all up =)

aa turbo kit

I am a distributor and installer (for so cal. area)- the aa kits are great. no problems with it- my cousin has a stage 1+ on his 325 and its been flawless. Lots of power too. the stage II includes larger mass meter, larger injector, and a thicker head gasket to lower the compression. Go with stage II- its definitely worth it and if you would like i can resale kits as well. talk to ray or mike at aa and they'll give you more heads up on the kit. you can also ask them if they would refer me as a resaler (tell them kenny from southern california was asking)- good luck and have fun with the kit!!!

yo kenny, if its you,....

i actually am getting a kit from ray, or tong, or whatever his name is, but i do need a installer. i am in Northern Cali, bay area, near Oakland.
How much do you think installation would run if i had it done by you?
How long would it take?
Let me know, as I still need a little info on this...
Thanks,
Russell

turbo kit install

It will run approximately 600-800 for install- to say the least. We are looking at about two day install time. Good luck

head gasket

that's where a lot of the labor time/money will be. Heads need to be pulled off, big PITA. Plus you've got to have someone who can tune your Vanos and camshafts to the AA turbo specs, unless the gentleman with the shop can do it himself.

If you're planning to do a 3.2L swap or whatever (unless I misunderstood), I'd wait and do the turbo then. Save big $$$ in install costs and downtime for your car.

I have the AA Stage 1+ kit on my car and love it, Kenny (m3k) and i installed it into my car, i am his cousin. We didnt have to mess with antyhing engine wise, because AA's chip is tuned so well that nothing needs to be messed with. Some places who do FI turn off the vanos, but AA keeps the VANOS feature. Get the turbo kit, best damn thing ive ever done to my car. My car was only down for 3 days, and the tranny swap took longer than the turbo 3 days VS 3 weeks.

Most turners have a problem adjusting timing and fuel while VANOS is on. VANOS advances cam timing and too much timing on a forced induction engine can mean detonation. Thus its turned off.

Active Autowerke has kept the VANOS on, with a little play of ignition timing, to allow better cylinder filling of the Air/Fuel ratio and decrease turbo lag.

vanos

Vanos is engaged at higher rpm after the turbo has already lagged

VANOS does NOT work that way. Its not VTEC.

VANOS is ON/engaged/cam timing advanced off idle and up till 5500rpms.
and after 5500 or depending on load, VANOS is then shut OFF/disengaged cam timing retarded.

So with those with VANOS engines, you cant say "Oh, my VANOS kicks IN at 5000-5500rpm" No.. no way, its turning OFF.

"At low speeds, the intake valves open late to ensure smooth engine operation. At mid range speeds, the valves open early (valve timing advanced, VANOS actuated) for increased torque, imporoved drivability, and reduced emissions. And at high speeds, the valves again open late for optimum power and poerformance" (Bentley 100-2)

Since AA claims max boost at around 2500-3000 rpm its safe to say the vanos is actvated after-

the vanos is on/off but i do believe its safe to say its re-engaged at 5000-5500.
