I am new to this forum. Like you I am interested in a turbo kit for my 1998 318ti. Recently I had a BMW dealer re-program the ECU for better performance. The power improvement was only noticeable above 3500RPM. I then installed a cold air intake system. The combination produced very noticeable power improvement in acceleration at take off and at high RPMs. Still I think I want more. That is why I am checking out a turbo kit. I checked out the supercharger, but $3200.00 is above my means. Anyone out there with a complete turbo kit for a 318ti? Jazzykelly.

don't turbo you will need to change internals if you want proper hp gains, with stock internals you will only be able to boost between 5-7 psi with no damage. if you super charge it easier on the engine and better for daily driving, go to KO Performance - High End Import Performance and OEM Parts, car parts . i am super charging my 318i and it is alot easier to install and less hassle.

Thank you chapellej. After much research I also found that installing a supercharger is the best way to go. My preference is the Downing-Atlanta supercharger. I will use the KO Performance only if I cannot get the Downing Atlanta. My installation is a near future project. Have to raise US3500.00 first. Please let me know how your car performs after the install.

will do i was hoping at first that i could twin turbo my car however upon much research this is no t a viable way to get power that is affordable, also less hassle. keep in mind you may also want to change cams as well as your exhaust manifold, install a cold air intake and chip. you will see some gains from that. i have done all of that plus custom 2.5 pipe for my exhaust and because the emissions restrictions arn't as strict i have removed my catalytic converter. also i have added a fuel pressure booster which helps with the fuel response. but do your research and also check out m42club.com

Thanks for your response. By shear accident I was able to buy a used DASC for $2700.00 (shipping included) from the friend of a Mechanic who works at a BMW specialty shop. He has checked it over, made sure all parts are there and replaced all the serviceable parts. I should be receiving it this week. I plan on starting the install as soon as I receive it. I will post the results.

I do not plan on making anymore modifications after the DASC is installed. 215+ hp and 200+ lbs of torque is more than enough for me with a 2800lbs car. The only thing I will change in the future is the muffler when it goes. I like the Remus mufflers.

For about the same money, you can do a motor swap on your 318. With a DASC you can get ~200hp, but at that HP level the m42/44 is topped out and the only way to get more power would be to rebuild with forged internals. With a motor swap, 200hp is the starting point. J!m at 318ti.org sells a swap manual to walk you thru the whole process including all the parts (with part numbers) that you would need.

Yes, that is true, but I think installing the DASC is much easier. Also 200hp is enough for me with this car. I do not race. All I need is just a little more power around town and on the highway. Thanks for the info though.

I think it's 210 at the crank and you don't need to do a built engine for more than that. After mods mine ran 189 at the wheels which is about 230 at the crank. I've seen more a few dasc's on 100% stock motors put out 200-225 at the wheels. Low end still sucks with the DASC though. I'm not sure what 0-60 is but a stock m44 with a stock DASC only runs low 15's in the 1/4 which is not much better than the average car with is mid to upper 15's. It was a fun car, but nothing great.

I read somewhere that the M44 with a DASC does 0-60 in 6-7 secs. It's up there with the 325i. I think that's good enough for me. I am really looking forward to having mine installed.
