getting it close to the exhaust ports is more important for output/spool. My rear turbo is squeezed in between the firewall and the cylinder head, because it's really close to the ports, therefor maximizing the exhaust's heat and velocity energy to reduce spool times (Peak TQ is at 2,700 RPM for me, 15 psi, ~310 lb/ft). Makes changing it a bitch, but I get better at avoiding bruises every time I have to do it. From the manifold's I have seen for BMW's, the tubular under-mount headers seem to me as the best design, but it kinda interferes with the motor mount, and hard to get to.
