Supercharging an M5 - the story.

In the following seven days starting - today you will be able to follow
the process of twin-supercharging a standard M5 in pictures and
some video shoots.

Next Wednesday (1st feb) we'll be dynoing the finished Beast so
the pace will be quite fast.

I'll be back later tonight (CET) with the first pictures.

Hope you all will enjoy the show !

Day 1 - Transport and Planning.

Day 1 - Transport and Planning.

OK starting off - with meeting Jonny (the owner of the car) in Uppsala
He just bought this M5 by import from Germany with some minor damages
(common way to get a nice car to a stupdly low price here in Sweden)

The paintshop is of course late so the car is missing the mirrors, rear and front bumpers (he fitted the old cracked bumper in front, and standard E39 mirrors just to get the car drivable)

- but aside from that, a quite nice car, with ACS suspension - and some upgrades like widescreen and the new steering wheel.

On top of it all we have something called winter here in Sweden.

Later same day I'll start the 1½ hour drive to Gävle - weater is quite poor,
I rather quickly i realized the anti-spin system is offline... my thoughts is now f*'ing "german imports"....

Well just when its dark im driving in to Alutech in Gävle a very small shop - but with two very nice
gyus I had the pleasure to learn to know over the last years with my 540is project(s).

The best things with small towns like Gävle, is that all the firms here know each other and
who does what best - so you can pretty much get anything done up here within 10 minutes drive.

Well Patrik and I spent about 2 hrs and a Pizza to talk things over, going thru the parts-list
and se what is there and whats is coming in, and risks of stuff that might not come in, and
what is needed to be manufactured.

After that we decided to call it a day, (we now think we have control over the situation
- lol have u heard that one before).
so we round it up by Patrik showing me the new piping his done on my M5 - so I snapped a few pics of it.

Well that pretty much ends day 1, tomorrow will be "manufacturing day" - Patrik will
do a Intercooler, Oil catch-tank, pipes and brackets etc.
- I will hunt down the Velocity Stacks that has been in transit for much to long time with Fedex....

....plus (not related to this M5) go and REFURBISH a NEW SPEC flywheel that is so damned bad made
it throws the starter ring about 1.5 mm so we can't get a proper ignition signal with it ....
the non-roundness is even visible by the eye... - so the day is quite full.
for some reason we have a statement here in Sweden about US Quality parts - I wont write it here
but I think you understand the content of it :-)

Ahh nice to get that out of my system. - Well see you all tomorrow, with some new pics.

Day 2 - Manufacturing Intercooler, pipes, rebuilding plenum

Day 2 - Manufacturing Intercooler, pipes, rebuilding plenum

Today I have not been in the shop at all but Patrik has been busy mosty with manufacturing the Intercooler that takes quite a bit o time - but he was kind enough to send me a few pictures on how things are looking, I've added an archive pic also.

If you have seen the pictures above first thing to do was a cleanup of the car.

Disassembling - a quite fast process.

End of day - Testing the intercooler and piping (archive picture)
Note here is the "stealth" version shown where the OE airboxes are left
and used to hide the pipes, If pipes are anodized black - you have a true stealth look.

Nighshift - Rebuild plenum to work under pressure conditions, with crankcase ventilation-reconstruction, the can in the middle is the crankcase oil-catch-tank.

I will add a a couple of more pictures from Day 2 - when I'am coming home the office.

You know what would rock hard? A clear cover for the M5 plenum so you could see the velocity stacks...

BTW, very nice work.
