| Just raced a Turboed S70 Volvo It was this guy I reported with on an election tonight, it was white, really, really nice looking. So we got onto the highway and I pulled him really easily and I wasn't even in my most powerful gear. The highway was dead empty and I didn't expect that he wanted to really go, so at 90mph I was surprised that he was still semi-close. So, I floored and instantly roasted him, then he knew I wanted to go fast so he caught up when I slowed down. From then on, I pulled very hard on him in most gears, when I went above 120mph, he would cut it off. I though he was limited, but he just said that was his cut off point. Anyway, the long jaunt at speeds of well over 100mph made it seem to me that his Volvo was very well planted and mannered at those speeds. Finanlly when we got off at the exit,(we live in the same dorm building), we got side by side at the light, I left him for dead and he complimented me on how fast my car was. His car was really solid and built speed as well, but the 540i is the golden standard, save for the M5 and E55. |

| Well, its possible... But if he was anything other than stock, he would have left you for dead. Dont get me wrong, the 540's are pretty quick on the highway, but an intake and chip on that volvo would have left you looking at his tail lights. And then a downpipe, exhaust, and boosted up turbos along with a few other insignificant mods, and you would have been thinking "What the Funk, was that a volvo?" Good kill, those 540's are beasts on the interstate. I killed a WRX with my fathers '98 540i sport three weeks ago coming back from atlanta. |

| PS. They're pretty stable up till the needle goes off the tach at 140. Dont really try to maneuver it at that speed, but you get the point. Off the line, they are slow unless you're running some more PSI. Stock, the volvo would get beat by an m3 off the line, but from a rolling start, the volvo would slowly walk away (STOCK). Modified, it would pull from a 540i off the line and continue pulling all the way past 120... Downside is... after a run like that, the turbo gets heated up, so if you tried a few times in a row, the 540 would be faster because you can consistently get similar times, where as the volvo's heated turbo would slow the car down quite a bit... |

| I'm going to have to side with Chris here, once those volvos start runninng some boost they are fast as hell. The only problem is there are not many tuning houses for those cars. IPD is the biggest and if you want you can have stuff shipped from europe. I still would love to set up a wagon as a race rar, and the volvo 850 turbo is the most likely target. I'm not suprised that you pulled a stock S70 (odds are it had the low PSI turbo) but give that guy a custom burnt chip and a free flow exhaust and that thing will just fly.

| I'd have to disagree with Cris who I think owns an S70 himself, there is too much of a gap between us for just an intake and chip to match, let alone "leave me for dead." The car does 0-60 stock in what, like the high 6s, while 540s consistently pull sub 6s, Car&Driver does it in 5.4 seconds. There is NO way a slightly modded S70 is going to have a chance. |

| I have to disagree here. I have had a Volvo 850 T5R. Modded with an ECU from IPD and exhaust and intakes. (270 hp according to IPD) No way will that have beaten my stock M3 off the line or at highway speeds. It just took too long to hit 120 MPH on the T5r...on the M3 I'm at 140 in a blink...

And just as a side note, I believe my car would possibly be faster than yours in the top end. (1991 M5 310hp and 7250 redline) I've raced my brothers T-5 Volvo on the highway, and I must say that thing is a beast. It will definitly leave any 540 (including my dads 1998 540i sport) and it even beat my M5 from 70-150 by about 5 carlengths His Volvo was modded when he raced me, but stock the last time he raced my dads 540. |

| I was referring to racing on the highway... as you said you had repeatedly beat the volvo. I know the 540 is fast... we drove it down to atl a few weeks ago, we raced a WRX on the highway... the guy was alone and there were 3 ppl in the 540... we murdered him. I know that the M5 will do very good in the top end, but it must be in its power band to fully take advantage of all that power. I do know that the turbo's don't have the same type of torque band as a BMW V8, but it is still pretty linear. I know his Volvo even took an E46 M3 from a roll.... a number of times... you should've seen the look on the guys face ![]() |
