Once you went FI what other mods did you think were necessary?

More tunability (is that a word?) and to get rid of several tuning problems so I opted for TEC3.

Better cooling for longer periods of driving.

Braking power

Chassis rigidity

Longer gearing to stay longer on boost.

Stronger clutch

What were yours?

well my car isn't quite running yet but i did all the mods i felt were necessary at the same time. (all be it this is a very tiny list compared to what is actually done to the car)

Brakes to increase stopping power from all that new found power

beefier m3 rear suspension to handle all that power

bigger clutch to handle the power

polyurethane bushings EVERYWHERE!! to keep from tearing out stock ones and they were old.

C/F hood to offset the added weight of the turbo kit.

Tom

Dado, do you think your car accelerates faster to around 150mph with the 2.93 gearing than it would with the stock 3.15 ratio? I understand why your gearing uses the turbos power more efficiently, but that is a big jump in gearing and should have really slowed down the car. I'm not sure which ratio would be faster, but your setup does seem like the best, since you get the extra top speed and better use of the turbo.

with shorter gearing you can't even build up boost. As soon as you boost you have to shift. With the longer gearing the power is smoother. I am working on a video right now and hopefully will have it ready by tonight so you have an idea how the gearing works.

Sounds cool. Is it video of before and after you changed the diff ratio, because I would really like to see that.

Also, why didn't dustin make a section sbout your car for M5 like he did for everyone else.

A free flow after market exhaust helps.Headers, bigger tubing and better muffler.BMW cats are pretty well built even for FI.

Actually Dado when i saw this. i was alittle surpirsed. Its a nice kill, but the start (launch) was slow. the modena had you there. Is that because of the gearing.

You can see that the power delivery was very smooth

Its a traction issue. Even on low boost, it is very hard to keep a turbo car right at the grip limit of the tires. Besides the Modena has 275 rear tires while dado's car has 255's. It really doesn't even look like he was trying at the start and left later, but its clear who is faster once they get moving.

A job that pays better?

On the subject of the Modena, one with an F1 tranny and launch mode can scoot out of the hole pretty damned fast.

last time it was dynoed with the TEC3 at 14 psi it put down 450 to the wheels. The car is being rebuilt so we are not sure yet what it will be putting down now.

When I think going FI I think of:

Standalone
Lowered Compression(usually first with HG then forged internals)
Heavy Duty Clutch
Ported head
Dual Valve Springs
Higher-end retainers(steel not Titanium unless you have $$$$ to replace all the time)
Drag radials in rear during sunny dry months
Possibly custom intake manifold(short-fat runners, large throttle body, large intake plenum)
Lots of gauges to monitor with peak, play & record settings
Coilover suspension of some type
RCCA
Taller gearing
Short shift kit
Big brakes
