What's exactily in a turbo kit?

So, I've have begun research on what may extreemly be my next big project. I own a 325is with 90K on the clock, and am thinking of attempting a custom turbo setup. I wonder if you may be able to tell me what items are generally in a turbo kit... ie... turbo, waste-gate, manifold... ect. A list of what ever items you may have needed would be a wonderful help. (brands and types would be great as well)

Thanks

If your looking for a shop to do the setup for you, I would highly recomend going to Eurospeed Performance and talking to them about it. I went there yesterday to get some parts and the owners know quite a bit about tuning bmw's. They've already done a custom turbo setup on a 328, but I'll let him speak for himself since I dont know the details.

Was that strictly the result of a too lean condition at WOT Bassmaster? And if so, why didn't it exhibit itself at lower speeds (at whatever RPM the engine was at 140mph)?

The hardware doesnt change you can make your kit identical...the tuning does.

Remember With the TEC III you can adjust every perimeter of your vehicles engine function. Whether that be good or bad.

The night before about 3am I had been out playing with the timing on the tec.. Avg timing in the boosted Zones is 15-22 degrees..Just on a whim I decided to bump the timing up 30 degree across the whole MAP. You can adjust this individually are all at once. Well the next Day about 9am I went over a friend of mines just to let him check out the ride...We went for a ride letting him drive...He asked could he open it up on the hwy. I said okay...well he kicked it up to 140 mph then came to a stop on the off ramp...The car cut off..the coolant hose had blown off. The coolant had leaked out...the car was running hot. We'll we reconnected the hose..put some water in..and started the car..It was missing like running on 4-5 cylinders. I new instantly that the piston was scarred...and at that time remembered about turning the timing up.
So it was just a stupid error on my part...it wasnt a lean conditon I was only running 5psi of boost. The overall timimg of 30 degrees plus 19 degree base led to the melted # 1 piston At the sustained high rpm.

So this actually has nothing to do with building the turbo kit...it was a tuning error using the TEC III and I knew better just forgot.

W'ell now I've become much better using the tec. The rebuild cost me 1800.00 And I've got my timing right, Airfuel right and enjoy the reliable 10-14 psi of boost that I run regularly.

Here is a data log of my latest tuning Air/fuel ratio. @ about 17 degrees of timing. Air fuel is almost dead on.. a little rich..I've found that my car likes an A/R ratio about 11.5 -11.8 when running over 12psi. (Pump 93 octane)

If you dont know how to dial in a standalone using a wide band..Just do the hardware part....and a custom chip.

The Tec III is very nice Tons of adjustments can be made...but its only as good as the tuner.

Dado had a custom chip and now he"s switch to the TecIII and really likes it...Im not sure how much he plays with though?

If you're a set and for get kind of guy the custom chips might be the ticket...only problem is they cost.

I would like to clarify the facts. They offer REMOTE tuning for AA, and do not actually do in house BMW tuning. Also dan's 328, well I wouldnt claim that to have been tuned, or even close to being tuned. He is not even driving it currently.

Bassmaster i was wondering how much did you dyno with your 60-1 turbo setup? And how much did everything actually cost in the end (without engine rebuild), i kno that you were trying to stay under $7,000. Thanks -Mike

I've have not dynoed yet. I plan on dynoing soon..I just wanted to get my air fuel dial in perfect. (as you can see Im close)....so I dont have to waste the dyno time doing that. I think I've spent about 7700.00, 2800.00 of that is the Tec III and wide band.
