| Remote mount turbo After seeing an article in car-craft magazine, I've been researching the concept of remote mount turbocharging and I have to say the more I read about it the more I like it. Here is what it looks like on an f-body http://ststurbo.com/inc/iview/461?idx=5&p=1581 check out www.ststurbo.com and read it ALL. There are pics, perf. #'s, and videos of all the vehicles they currently have kits for. One thing they mentioned is that they use some kind of special turbo and claim that it is designed to run in the rear of a vehicle and would perform poorly if mounted in the front, just as a conventional front mount would perform poorly if mounted in the rear. What could be done to these turbo's (Garrett) in order to make it suitable for rear placement? Is that just a crock of sh!t and any turbo would work? It would be incredibly easy to build one of these kits for our cars, the only thing stopping me from doing it is sourcing the "special" turbo.

i read most of the info, but if you bottom out still, the turbo is gonna get messed up, and especially with how low most bimmers ride, they dont ride as high as the avg domestic car

Dado, what problems do you see with the intake being low in the back? I think as long as your not doing any off roading (which I don't think anyone does with a bimmer ) it would be fine. I have a Buick Grand National and my air filter mounts low to the ground and I have never had a problem. Just my opinion.

It's right in front of the left front tire. Still gets spray from the tire, but the filter faces straight down so the water just runs right off. Even if it does ingest a minute amount of water, it should not hurt anything as I used to run a water injection kit with no problems. Last edited by BGN : 10-20-2004 at 12:49 PM.

I would like to know more about where I can buy one of these "special" turbos. I plan on doing a little engine swap in my mini and adding a turbo and this would be an awesome solution for it, the engine bay is so damn small but if I could mount the turbo in the back, even in the trunk with a scoop out the side for the intake and cooling that would be awesome!

The only thing special about the turbo is the sizing of the exhaust turbine and compressor. That is the only thing possible. I beleive it is just a regular turbo with a more efficient exhaust turbine to compensate for the lack of pressure and heat that far back in the exhaust. Anyone else have any other possible ideas?
