It's tough to build for under $5k, if you do all the labor yourself then its possible, but the lowest I have seen anybody keep a custom turbo that actually worked well was around $7k, it's a costly investment because of all the little things that are forgotten about like new clutches, tuning, over and over, all the little maintenance work that should be done before you boost......its costly no matter how you look at it

Yes I am going to do all the labor myself, I am also gong to build a 3.0 or 3.2 M3 engine with 8.5:l CR pistons, so hopefully I can run with around 17 psi boost.

I thought you only wanted to spend $5k?
You better have close to $15k budgeted....talk to EMC if your serious, he can help you build a kit, expect to spend $8-$10k on quality parts to build the kit

i have a used AA kit for sale, or just parts if you want. I still need to get a manifold to make it a complete kit.
EMC takes FOREVER to build a kit tho, he is slammed with work. All you really need is know how and someone local who can weld. Thats honestly it, and money and time, lots of money and lots of time.

If you are wanting to run 17 lbs, prepare to spend at least $20K including W/A injection, fuel system, clutch, drivetrain, headgasket, turbo parts, igntion, the list goes on....

ah, thats a little overboard Scho,
My car will be running a complete stg2+ with the MLS HG and everything for right around $12k
but the thing about building a turbo car is you'll always want more power, and things break, and you just better have a substantial slush fund for "fixing it" when it breaks,
It depends on how you source the parts, and a lot on how you drive it....

umm good luck buying "8.5:1 Cr pistons" the guy will think youre a idiot, C.R. is based on cylinder volume,deck clearance,gasket thickness,chamber volume minus Dome volume.

V1=cylinder volume
V2=Deck clearance
V3=gasket thickness
V4=chamber volume minus piston dome volume

CR = V1+V2+V3+V4 divided by V1+V2+V3

CID=bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x # of cylinders

and with forced induction youre gonna need higher flow injectors and a fuel pressure reg too. adding onto the cost of your 5k plan

Thank you Mr. Encyclopedia. Now you are done quoting equations, you can buy these pistons from JE, or else AA would have a hard time making fully built motors.
