| EGT gauge which to get and what are your personal experiences with them Here are a couple I have looked at. http://store.yahoo.com/supra/hks60elplaye.html http://store.yahoo.com/supra/gred52boosor.html http://store.yahoo.com/supra/gr60exgasteg.html This one you can chose between boost or egt. Of course I am lookinga t the egt option. http://store.yahoo.com/supra/ap60elserboo.html also if you have any info on this air/fuel meter let me know. http://store.yahoo.com/supra/gredairfuelk.html

| after looking at some sites and talking to some people the conclusion was computech for EGT. Here is the system. http://www.computechsys.com/egtsystems.html

| Im running the Blitz EGT guage. Heres my question, maybe someone might be able to answer this. Is there really such big differences from each brand? Do certain brands measure the gas temp more accurately than others? I just thought that the thermocouple needle used are preety similar to each other.

| I was going to say the same thing as E34Biturbo,it measures the exhaust temp coming out...I'm using the AutoMeter(Pyrometer) unit on both, the M3 & the EVO.We've had nothing but good luck with them. The probe does all of the work, which may be the only thing we'll ever have to change.Seems like these other units you pay for a lot bells & whistles that are not needed, not like you have a whole lot of room left to mount that big 'ol box somewhere.I don't really care for the a-pillar gauge pods, however,it's necessary for the additional readings. The only one's I'm using in the M3 on the A-pillar are the boost gauge & EGT gauge, don't really care for the ricey look,if you know what I mean. However, just trying to help with the options

| I believe the computech is different. It samples something insane like 8000/second ... They are normally back-ordered. I forget the exact difference; but, it supposedly is much more reliable and accurate than your typical Autometer pyrometer (which I have anyways) ... the computech I was going to purchase but they were out for like 4 months ... got tired of waiting. |

| gonna hijack this thread since it looks like Dado may be done... along the lines of gauges... I bought my e36 w/ stage 1 AA turbo and it had a 3 pod of VDO gauges; oil temp, boost/vac, and oil pressure. My question is the usefulness of a A/F gauge in everyday driving. Once the car is tuned properly am I ever really gonna need a A/F guage permanently in the car? I ask because I'm thinking of ditching the oil pressure gauge for something more useful like possibly a EGT gauge? I guess I fear something going wrong and the mixture going dangerously lean causing total meltdown rather than an oil pressure failure. I mean if the oil pressure suddenly goes to zero who's looking at the gauge anyways? You're idiot light should come on and you shut it down NOW. Whereas with a EGT or A/F gauge you can glance at it occasionally just for piece of mind right? I guess I coulda summed it all up like this... if you could only have one aftermarket gauge would it be EGT or A/F? Barker |

| Whatever you buy just have a buzzer so it ll warn you. We were tuning on the highway and AFR was so good 11,8:1. But EGTs were 1550F and then 1650F and that was the end of the gauge. Due to the restricted and small exhaust turbine housing we had extreme back pressure and this kept EGts so high. We had to give up at 26-28 psi and now we buy a bigger turbocharger. So, despite fine AFRs EGT showed and warned us about the problems. It does not indicate the problem but gives a clue. Sometimes you have high AFRs due to knock based retarded timing. Everything seems fine but either a bad octane fuel, or a malfucntioning fuel pump, injector, mass flow meter or map may cause wrong AFRs and knock. You ll basically see the high EGTs at these cases.

| I would keep the oil pressure gauge. You don't need an oil pump failure for it to goto zero. It will tell you if you have a slow leak somewhere as well. a/f gauge is worthless unless you get a wideband O2 gauge. Around $350 for the cheapest one that I know. www.innovate.com is the website. EGT is helpful IMO, especially during the summer months. So, I would say both. However, the EGT's give a DELAYED response (except for the computech system) ... thus, what you see temperature wise if it is bad, has already done damage by the time you notice it. I would much prefer having a wideband O2 to accurately measure afr. The EGT is to unreliable IMO ... the normal ones at least. |
