changing from internal to external wastegate?

Other then the turbo unit itself, what kind of hardware changes do I need to make when upgrade from an internal to external wastgate?

Karl at AA said something about drilling a hole in my exhaust manifold. Also there'sa pipe that goes from the turbo into the exhaust downpipe?

While the head is off the car I'd like to do any mods now while it's easier to get to the exhaust manifold. Even if I don't get the new turbo unit in right now, I'll plug the holes in the manifold and downpipe if I have to.

I think it would be much easier to have the piping for the wastegate made before you put the manifold back in.
if you want to check a turbo just like yours out but with external wastegate you can come out to st helens and look at mine.
my car is currently not running(atleast not very well). blew my headgasket. I am swapping in a 3.2 i picked up from funkmasta and going with a much bigger turbo setup.
I may even be interested in making some kind of trade for my turbo that is already modified for external wastegate for yours which is not. when i am done with my new setup i will almost have a complete kit minus a manifold. but i do not think i would sell the kit with external wastegate

i think the best thing for you to do is wait for forrest to be done upgrading his and just buy his complete wastegate setup, thats what i ended up doing, i just found someone selling there whole external setup with plumbing and all,
fresh start, go to bimmerforums.com and PM EMC about tapping your manifold.....he is doing mine and he is a great help!

yes, it is the notorious "Hooman's" old car.

I just fired off a PM to EMC asking for help... thanks for the reference Rich. I'll see if he can tell me the size and location etc of the required hole.

Thanks forrest, I might take you up on that looksie ok? Your car wouldn't be up on a lift or anything so I could see the underside too?

About the trade thing I'm confused... you say you may be interested in a trade, but you do not think you would sell it? huh?

Anyway, I do need to see an external wastegated turbo up close, or at least some pics just so I can speak a little more intelligently to my mechanics and you guys.
