| 1200 hp M1. BMWs 4 banger 1.5L F1 motor M1 with a badass 4 cyl M12 motor. BMW M1 with Formula 1 Turbocharged Engine - Google Video <embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=6119291851686945330&hl=en" flashvars=""> </embed> http://kotisivu.mtv3.fi/olli.virtanen/ |

| yeah but even the twin charged lancia delta only made 500 or so, haha.....only. but that thing was TWIN CHARGED and it didnt even make half of what this m1 is supposedly making, i dunno it just doesnt look believable to me. if a turbo and a supercharger and almost no regulation on general safety couldnt make the lancia more than 500, then i doubt there was anything they could do to squeeze 1200hp out of a 1.5 L 4 cyl in the early 80's. and 1200hp should look alot faster than it does in that vid.

| guys, that''s the magic of BIMMA!!!! they stunned the world with that engine..! shortly after the F1 commitee people put major restictions and hp output was slashed. Strange that F1 cars were actually more powerful in the past huh. ![]() Rumors have that BMW engineer put the used 4cly blocks outside to weather and urinate on them this make the blocks stronger

| heres a link to some info about the engine: http://www.research-racing.de/bmwturbo.htm and this "On 24 April 1980 BMW announced its entry into Formula One as a supplier of engines. Taking a standard production four-cylinder engine block, Paul Rosche built a 16-valve power unit reduced in size to 1.5 litres. Running on special fuel and featuring an exhaust gas turbocharger operating at an absolute pressure of 2.9 bar equal to an overpressure of 1.9 bar, this engine started its career with maximum output of approximately 650 bhp - and ended its career with up to 1400 bhp. Says Rosche: "We weren't able to say exactly how powerful the engine was, since our dynamometers back then didn't go beyond 1280 bhp." But whatever the maximum output of the engine was, shattering power was certainly the name of the game." that was from http://www.m3-motorsport.demon.co.uk/page2_2.htm so theres two sources, who else can add to those?

| Its a Bimmer who cares how it got the 1200 stallions. All I know that a 1.5 ltr making that much grunt is amazing. I bet assbar pissed his panties when he saw that. It said on the link that the car during qualifying is about 1200hp and racing is about 600-900hp. Like you said it doesnt look that fast. I think that it was set to a lower stage of boost or someshit.

| BMWs dyno could not take more than about 1300hp, so they assumed that the hp-numbers was somewhere between 1400-1500. BMW M10 power yeah!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Rest of the pics: http://www.gurneyflap.com/bmwturbof1engine.html |

The Audi S1 had more power then the Lancia ever had but with a single turbo. The same audi engine made even more power when used in IMSA, about 700hp out of the 2.2liter. As it were they(group B cars) usually had more power then they could use anyway, so the extra stress of getting more power would have been a waste. The F1 engines only ran 1300-1400hp during qualification (very few laps) and then they changed engine. Rally cars have to run for 3 days. The F1 engines were basically run on toluene which made it possile to reach the 4.5-5bars needed. 5 bar = about 70psi. I don't think the rally cars were allowed that. On the site of this finish M1 it says he runs it at 700hp I think. That is about what a Swedish Z3 with a 1.5liter F1 engine pushes too. And don't confuse things, the M1 never had the M12 engine originally or in racing under official bmw name. They had I6's, basically stock street 277hp, Group C(?) 470hp (NA 3.5) and there were a turbo 3.3liter version with 800+hp used, I think. The F1 cars of yesterday had about 900hp out of a 3liter V10. The power of this years smaller V8's are unknown to the public so far. Was a few comments on this and that ![]()
