If it is wobbling like it is trying to escape, sounds like a SIDE issue may be that the motor mounts are worn out.

However, as to the issue itself, is it running at a low rpm? Has it not been running for a while? When was the last time the ingition system was overhauled (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc). If they are worn out, it could be having some issue due to that. I'm not a tii person, but have dealt with some rough running M10's in e21's and that can USUALLY help smooth some things out....

Anyone else got any ideas?

Yeah I would check the timing, since it is Mech. Fuel Injection the pump/injectors might be messed up. Check all the motor/tranny mounts. But you need to keep in mind that a 2002 is not a REALLY smooth car like most newer or even like 80s+ vehicles. I own a e30 and a 2002...the 2002 feels like a classic car.

isn't there a instructor? why guess? learn from asking questions not fixing random things, then you'll never know what fixed the problem

For the wobbling issue, it sounds like wobbly motor mounts, which is actually normal for these cars. As to the degree of the wobble, I can't tell, but these engines wobble a good deal on stock original mounts. If it wobbles more than normal, I'd check the integrity of the mounts, looking for metal cracks or obliterated rubber. If you find nothing, but you're on what looks like original rubber mounts, I'd at least replace them. There may be something stiffer in the aftermarket, but haven't checked myself.
