New Mod for my bmw 2002...

I already have titanium valves in one engine but I'm building another for the bmwcca car.. I bought the first set $$$$.. just finished making the first intake and exhaust on my own lathe out of titanium.. Everything was going pretty good till I set my lathe on fire.. needless here are some pics of the valves.. titanium is on the left..

1.5mm oversize and a 35% weight savings..

here's the link to the rest of them

Very impressive! As stated above I too, wish I had the skill/tools/money/experience/etc to do that kind of machine work.

I started out with a titanium valve "blank" and then mahined it down to the size I wanted it and then cut them to lenght and there's a couple of angles that must be cut... titanium is a funny metal you can do high speed but you can't make a deep cut... takes a while to make those... the fire came from the fact I was getting frustrated.. and tried to make a deep cut.. well the tip starts to get red...and instead of chips flying off of it.. it got hot enough to ignite and just burn.. so I got fly hunks of yellow hot burning shit which then ignited the other chips in the lathe.. it worked out fine though.. wait till I have a whole set of them.. the weight savings is just amazing when you start to look at your valvetrain acceleration and how much valve spring you have to run.. oh the price was kinda a deal.. around $25 a blank..

would you be willing to more of this? Say for example If I wanted a set? How much would you charge or think it would cost?

for your m10? I could make them but these titanium valves have a different stem diameter.. requires different guides... I was replacing my guides in my head as part of a freshning up so I went to a more conventional 5/16" hole instead of the 8mm (I think) guide.. anyway to run these I replace the keepers with titanium.. the retainers can be steel but "why" so they're titanium and the valves are matched.. yes I could do it... it won't be cheap though... the valve train assembly is around 35-40% lighter keeping those fragile rocker arms in check because you don't have to run as tough of a spring per RPM.. but if you don't have the rods to hold the pistons on then you can't run the RPM anyway.. the valves machined would be like $60 a valve with the correct keeper groove.. the guides would need to be installed and I think they're $25 a guide because I have to machine the OD on them.. it all takes time but this is where personal TLC can make a nice difference in the engine..

Yeah, m3turbo16g, it does take alot of time almost to much to charge someone... alot of the cuts must be precise or you'll end up with different valve sizes and thicknesses resuling in different compression ratio's.. Here's the first 6 valves completed.. polished up and ready to install... man they shine like chrome... picture really does it no justice...

I'm so tickled with how the project it comming out.. never was really sure in my mind if I could make my own titanium valves..
