Differential problems, anyone?

My 2008 M3 (coupe, 6sp, 19" factory wheels) has developed an interesting noise in the rear end. At very low speeds when making a sharp turn, there is a rubbing/grinding noise not unlike tires rubbing against the car body. I think it is unlikely that the problem is with the tires, as they are factory delivered 19" wheels/tires. I have read somewhere that a similar problem was caused with insufficient level of oil in the differential. Any ideas out there? My dealer says they have not heard anyone else complain of this noise.

I have no idea what the problem is, since I know nothing about e92 m3's, but I would think that if the problem is mechanical (not the tires rubbing) then your warranty should cover that. Just take a service technician on a ride in your car and show him what happens.

Sounds similar to what happened on my previous cars when I didn't break-in the diff properly. The dealer may end up replacing that rear end. You didn't romp on it as soon as you got it did you?

Could be many things. Is the problem easily replicable? Even if it isn't take it to your dealer and let them take a look at it. One of the best pleasures of having a warranty is using it. Plus you get a rental to play with for a day

2008 M3 differential problem

I have the exact problem you are describing with my 2008 M3. The dealer changed the oil in my differential to "thicker" oil and told me to drive it for 600 miles and the noises should go away. Feel like a lab rat.

Car is still new enough you probably are. I would imagine with how that diff is built a little bit of noise is to be expected. With that said I will gladly trade you my noise free E46 for your noisy e92

I had the same problem you just described. It is the precursor to a blown rear differential. the BMW mechanics open up the diff and the oil smelt really bad and was very dark. that means the differential has a problem and needs to be changed. So to conclude, your noise/problem is definitively the rear differential and don't let your dealer tell you otherwise.

Cheers
