The other thing is, for the same reason that the e30 m3 had a 4 cylinder and the 325i had a 6, a straight 6 is fundamentally more rough at high rpms. A 4, and an v8 are better at high rpms.... so the new m3 will potentially have a larger / smoother powerband as a result of being more balanced.
